I have a big outdoor-lighting power supply. 1000W I think.
Would it be worth it to try and mod it for DC?
I doubt it's regulated and it's definitely Chinese (Home Depot).
It was a freebie, left over from a job.

IMHO..I guess it depends on what you want use it for. I'd do it for fun to power something I wouldn't mind losing if my power supply project went belly up but not on a $1500 hf radio.

I just dig it out of the garage.
It's like this but bigger:

Basically three 300W power supplies in one box.

if it is a big ass transformer I would do it, but wouldn't bother with switch mode. A lot of work. rectifier, filter, regulator.1/2 a dozen pass transistors . over volt protection etc .

How about one bridge rectifier with one smoothing cap and one voltage regulator?
If it works for one of the 300W outputs, Ill do all three.
Also there are 3 legs out of each transformer.
"Low", "common" and "high".
I'm thinking low is close to 12V across common.
High is probably more like 15V.
And ill have to put a dvom between low and high for the heck of it.

You might consider more than just one filter capacitor, with a choke. between them. What might look like pure DC with the supply unloaded might have a bunch of ripple under even a moderate load.
