For a good sniper ( with excellent riffle and ammo ) has already had confirmed kills at beyond 1.5 miles away.
With the newest Sniper rifles and specially made ammo..
It is thought 2 mile range is easily possible

Carlos Hathcock made a kill shot of over 1 and a quarter miles using a n M2 machine gun with a scope. A single shot in the 60's.
He also made a shot that is emulated in most sniper movies. He shot an NVA sniper through his scope.
