Hello gang. My old 1011D is being recapped and I have questions about the VFO. It appears like its been narrowbanded??? Is that a thing? Ive tried to open up the bandwidth to get my 40 channels but its f#$%ed. I receive channel 1 on 18 and 40 on 36. That is making it very difficult to tune in to a specific channel. The 8950 RF out checks good at 70% on my old heathkit tube tester. Dont know how efficient the tester is but thats the score. I pulled the tube until I get the recap completed. So, im concentrating now on why the VFO goes down as low as 25.500ish mhz and as high as 28.100ish mhz. The circuitry was never modified. Inside the VFO looks original. The parallel pf disk caps on both the CB and 28mhz along with the 28mhz tuning cap appear to have been sealed in place. The CB tuning cap does not have a seal, nor does it look like any remnants of a seal was even there. Id like to get it to align on the dial as shown. 1 on 1, 40 on 40. Does anyone have knowledge about this issue? Or, was it a factory mod or modded by someone? The TX on CB mod was never done so I'm really wondering whats going on with it.

Hi,

Have you checked the VFO and carrier oscillator frequencies? It has 2 reference crystals. Have you checked those? Do you have a manual?

I just picked a 1011D up yesterday and am learning about it.

I have the manual but its nothing like the sams service notes at all. No alignment instructions as to the tuning coil calibration. There is no indication as to how to align the cans, I see the crystals. I didnt scope them yet or put my frequency counter on their oscillators because I am able to receive on both the 27mhz CB and 28mhz as well. The VFO does not appear to have been tampered with inside. Generally it looks like it was somehow broadbanded because of how low it goes and how high also. From 25mhz to 28mhz in CB mode so I pick up all the CB channels but between 18 and 36 on the dial. Makes it very difficult to tune on ssb. Am I making sense to you?

VSWR,

That's interesting. Its challenging when its normal to use sideband, but with it like yours, it would be difficult without a good frequency counter. If you do facebook, there is a siltronix group that has some good people in it that might be able to help, or hopefully someone here will chime in.

Thanks Stuart, yeah its awefully difficult to tune but I can do it. Its just that norhing matches up at all. I tested the 8950. The tube tester says its 70%. I removed it though. Not going to transmit until I sort out the frequency issue. I think it got broadbanded somehow. There is not much to the VFO. A few caps coils and tunable caps. I could see that tuning or changing a cap or modifying the coils could swing it to another band but its swung both ways. Making the 40 channel very pinched between 18 and 36. Im thinking it may have something to do with the coil cans. Question is which one or ones?... hmmm. I'll check with Facebook. Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.

Here is the most information about the Siltronix 1011 and the Swan-branded versions you'll find on the web. Scroll down the page to the green crossbar. You'll see three zip files and four pdfs that should fill in a lot of blanks about this radio.

  • @ Hambones amps:
Does anyone know if you can replace the 2290 in a galaxy dx 93t twin turbine with a 2sc2879 red dot? If so, what would have to be tuned?
  • @ ShadowDelaware:
Hambones the entire amp section would have to be retuned, and the rf transformers re wrapped.
