I have and use a Galaxy DX99V in my vehicle - daily. It has this terrible habit of not being stable for the first fifteen minutes after it is turned on. I don't live in a cold climate here in CA. Morning and overnight temperatures seldom go below 32F. But even if it is 40F overnight and I turn the radio on, it drifts so much that it is unusable until it warms up. Even 50F makes it a bit squirrelly.
I recently aligned the PLL after unlocking the fine clarifier. The 10.240mhz reference oscillator crystal was reading 10.24032mhz at the PLL chip (pin 4) after I let it thoroughly warmed up on the bench for over an hour.
Is it out of tolerance?
But is it this crystal that is causing the problem? I think not; but I thought I would open up this discussion and get some insights because of other possibilities (before I can begin to remedy this issue). Or is it the thermistor that is faulty? Or perhaps is it the PLL offset oscillator crystal? Or maybe the carrier offset oscillator crystal? Or it is something else that I should look into?
If I must replace a crystal or three; then I have resigned myself to get the job done. Just want to get to the core of the problem and make as stable as is practical w/o missing the problem area. Is there a place that has these crystals on-the-shelf to replace the original part for a better tolerance part - one that stays stable w/o going to a 'Temperature Controlled Xtal Oscillator' ("TCXO")?
My Cobra 148GTL, GrantXL, and Magnums don't share this malady.
Why does Galaxy and Ranger radios suffer so?
