STEPPER IR QRT

Not good news for those who've made the SteppIR inve$tment.

A local friend now a sk had a stepper …. nothing but trouble.
he lived on the shore of Lake Superior.ice-sand -wind for
$7 grand Id be xxxxxd
That's probably one of the toughest environments one could be put in. Really a great concept and they work well, I've talked to several guys that run them. Usually find they have a Taj Majal shack when I look them up on QRZ. :)

I always liked the build concept but never got my wallet out. I would need a bigger wallet...
Need a wallet for the SteppIR and another wallet for the tower to perch that weight and wind load on.....................

Personally I would not take a Steppir if it was given to me. The thoughts of having FULL SIZED elements for 20m or even 40m when operating on 10m or 15m just speaks of crazy. If the elements somehow physically got shorter then sure, but having that tape element running inside fibreglass tubing......not for me. I cannot imagine the wind and ice load.

I helped my buddy W3MJ (SK) put up a DB18e. Worked flawlessly for 13 years. I took it down when he died and passed it on to another ham.

My friend John NJ3I (SK), installed the BigIR Vertical. Worked great with 40 buried radials. He tried the optional 80m coil but it couldn’t handle 1,500w as SteppIR claimed

I know of another ham that has the Monster IR up for 15 years with no trouble.

All three of these hams lived in Pennsylvania. We get our fair share of ice.

Care while assembling seems to be the key to longevity.
