Found the problem I had the mic gain to high sounds fine now...

They say it is not an amplified mic but it sure behaves like a power mic. I run the mic gain wide open on my cobra 29 with a rk56 or astatic 636. I had to run it at 12:00 with the sl41. There is an audio level control in the sl41 but even all the way down it's still loud.
