Superstar 4900B

Been looking for an inexpensive base and I notice that 1stop is now carrying these. Works on both 120 ac and 13.8 dc.

Anyone own one of these or can tell me anything about them? What is the frequency range (how many bands)? What would be the expected output with a 1stop peak and tune with channel upgrade?

Thanks for any help!

GoNo2,

The 4900b was a great concept in a base radio, unfortunatly it never lived up to the concept. Power supply problems and cheap parts were its downfall. I owned one and although I liked the radio it spent more time being repaired than being on the air. For the money you would be much better off with a good mobile radio, like a Lincoln, 2510, or Delta Force, and a power supply. My 4900 would do about 40 watts on SSB, AM was not to bad 4 watts swingin 10. I just picked up a Kenwood TS140s on ebay for 255.00. A lot more radio than a Superstar and less money. Hope this helps

Gono2,

On my 4900B, I found about 10 watts on AM, and only about 18 watts on SSB.

On comparison, I found much better modulation coming from my Uniden Washington base, than from the 4900B.

I think Fasteddy is right. You can probably do better than the 4900B, but at least 1Stop's price is reasonable. I paid $80 more for my 4900B when they first came out.

Channel mod is easy. It is a change in jumper position.

The radio is made to be marketed in different configurations,

10 meter only

CB only

AM FM only

Export version-full coverage/all mode.

all performed by moving a jumper or two.

Cbtricks.com has the mods.

I had shelved mine for the past year, but just put it back on the bench since www.cbtricks.com/ now has the alignment procedure on there.

I was told by the helpful members of the forum that one big problem with the radio was the unregulated power supply. It put out close to 25v, and some of the components were only rated at 16v. That caused problems. My internal supply is putting out 22v.

I would think the folks at 1stop might be able to tell you if they find the radios improved over the units from a couple of years ago.

I would say that I was disappointed in my 4900B.

I still keep it in hopes of being able to find the magic combination to get better performance out of it.
