I have been a user of THE VIRTUAL ENGINEER - Broadcast Engineer Message board for years. Excellent threads on all things pertaining to Broadcast Engineering from extremely knowlegeable engineers. I went to access the board today and received a message that it had been shut down. The host posted this message :

The Virtual Engineer: 2007-2024(?)

Hey Gang! I just wanted to put something up here. It's with a bit of sadness that I have to tell you that our site is probably lost to time.

Unfortunately, the host has locked access to our database for some unknown reason. I am working with them to try and resolve it, but I can't make any guarantees. As many of you know, this has been a labor of love - several volunteers have kept the site running, and I've spent plenty of money over the years paying for the hosting. Of course, the biggest contributors were you guys. You made the site as valuable as it was.

I will keep working on getting the database back, but if I do, the future of the site is uncertain. To be honest, social media has taken the place of message boards for better or worse. Add to that the fact that my workload has only gone up over the years, and I'm not sure that I can keep it going. Once or twice I've thought about handing it off, only to get some pushback.

So, bear with me. At the very least, I'm trying to get the database back. If I can manage that, we'll get things back to where they were, and I can give some thought about what's next.

I hope that the site can be recovered as it was a superb learning tool for things related to broadcast engineering. I will miss it not only for the content but also for the members who I felt were good friends. I guess all good things must come to an end.

Redundancy becomes a necessity at my age. It’s nature’s way of providing me with compensation. If you’re and old fart and still believe you have a steel trap mind, you’re either a freak of nature or a liar.

That's a shame about The Virtual Engineer shutting down. That was a valuable resource that I used from time to time in relation to my day job. I wonder if it made it onto one of the archive sites before it went away?

I don't miss the content as much as the chats with other members that I knew.
I'm the opposite LOL! Didn't know any of them personally but there was a lot of useful information in the threads on FM Broadcast Engineering & FM Broadcast antenna systems that I referenced fairly often.......it's always a loss when valuable information is no longer available!
