Titan....Is this normal

I have been getting good reports with this radio but.....I just hooked the meter up to it tonight and it dead keys 7 watts but when i talk on it the modulation is good but the watts drops from 7 to 5 sort of a backward swing when I talk into it. Any suggestions?

First, your meter may show "backwards" swing even though the radio isn't doing that. A tech could tell for shure, also a "light bulb dummy load" will get dimmer w/backswing, & brighter with forward, regardless of what the meter is telling you..

Second, that is Way to high a dead key on AM for a titan, if it really is doing 7, that could explain why there is no power left for modulation.

Third, you could be using a radio shack meter, in which case you probably have a 4w deadkey & forward swing.....

Well I just got back and got to play with it and I cut it back to 3 watts turned the amc up to 100% now it will deadkey 3 and swing 9. Thanks all, Jim

At one time I was considering buying a radio from R&R Communications. I emailed them asking what they did to peak and tune a radio. They wrote back explaining the procedure. The one statement that sticks in my mind is, "we clip the modulation limiter". My personal preference is to keep the limiter intact. Not trying to bash, just passing on some information.

I did get the radio from R&R and it seemed like the only thing done was to turn up the am power. The only thing clipped I could see (using magnifing glass, Old eyes) was the 11 meter conversion.



So what I did was set everything the way RR said and use my KL60 and I was making some good contacts last nite <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=""> I have it dead keying 1w and without the amp on it will swing to about 6 or 7 watts, But when I turn on the amp it will deadkey about 15 and swing to 35 and peak at 40w. SSB im getting close to 60. Im using a dm 452 echo mic and I have the mic gain on the radio wide open and the power adjustment about half at the mic. RR, you seem to know these radios pretty well. I've got a problem that maybe you can help with? I had my Titan NPC'd. 1 watt deadkey swings to 10, no problem. Drives an amp good. However, now on SSB, I only get 12 watts. I've messed with the AMC and the ALC. I can't get more out of it. Do you think this is because of the NPC mod? Any help is appreciated.

OK, since I never looked at the radio before it was modded, I'm not sure what all I'm looking for. Here's what I see:



If i have the radio open face toward me, so you can read display normally, it looks like a two items have been added in the left rear. They're covered in heat shrink, so I'm not sure what they are. I can remove the heat shrink easily enough if needed. On the opposite side of the board (turn radio over, it's now right rear) I see a resistor that looks like it didn't come with the radio. The colors are red, black, black, gold. reading from top to bottom as it's oriented. This probably isn't much help, so if need be, i can take a couple pics and post it.
