Base TRAM 1498

you will not notice any difference between these antennas and an A99 on receive or transmit.
they are all the same basic design on the inside.

if you notice a difference between either of these antennas and a previously installed A99 it means that either the old antenna had a problem, or the new one does.

My buddy's Tram 1498* definitely outperforms my
A-99** on both transmit and receive. :D

* mounted at 36'
** in my attic

Riverman, you almost got me with that one LOL!

i started typing up a blah blah blah about different signals and different locations, and then looked again at your asterisks!

nicely done sir. nicely done.

If I had more room and a whole lot less metal in my attic I'd try an A-99 there horizontally. I think I read in a thread somewhere where a fellow tried once that but can't remember the outcome.

Riverman71: If your looking to run Horz antenna in attic. You might try a Double Bazooka antenna.
They can be less affected by metal and junk in close proximity to elements than others...they are normally broad-banded also and easy to tune once you get them in place. However do not try to tune them in a different location and then change mounting,
They work the best when tuned where final location is set,
Just a thought...They work as an Inverted V or "L" or Inverted "L" set-up also...so pick the best spot away from most "Junk" and give it a go.
All the Best

when i nmeasured my a99 it was less than 16.5 feet from the top of the mounting tube but the prototn was a full 18 feet over the mountuing tube and was stronger on transmit and receive and the a99 wasnt very old

An old thread but here goes anyway. Over the weekend we had a 2 day wind storm with sustained 60 to 70 mph gusts, that said the maco v58 didn't survive..... Well without deep pockets of hobby funds some research I found and pulled the trigger on the 1498. So I see it's really similar and comparable to the a99 and other copies but according to reviews the quality seems to be better. I guess I'll soon find out about that. I've read several horror accounts on the imax 2000 so I didn't go for that one. So being an older thread maybe someone has some experience with this antenna and can tell me a little bit about the tuning and performance?? It'll be on 11 meters for use.

Sorry about your Maco.
Be sure and let us know how your Tram performs. (y)

It's difficult to get an antenna to radiate a decent signal pattern when it's mounted in an attic. While you will have problems with big pieces of metal (furnaces, AC evaporators, etc.), the real problem comes from the numerous nails used in the framing and the roofing of the house. These nails pretty much form a metal shield of sorts, and wreak havoc with the radiated pattern and swr. Unless you have no other option, I would forget an antenna in your attic.
