my local police dept. has a scrambled (?) system.has anyone else heard of this. it sounds like SSB. what is this? anything good such as names or places are scrambled up. they will tell the dispatcher to go to privite and that's it -you can't understand a single word of what they transmit.

thanks and 73's

Most likley trunked. Our community has had a trunked system for several years on the 800 mhg band. Kinda eliminated several good scanners. The only place around here to get a good trunk scanner is Rat shack.

i have a just a little 16ch. uniden desk top.(programmable) when you guys talk of trunked - do you mean tx on one freq. and rx on another ? what i hear is both sides on the same freq.- it's just grabbled and distored and then i hear the ETT beeps that both side use at the end of the conversation. there are 3 counties around me that have went to this system. the man at radio shack said that it was digitally scrambled and that cracking it's code is a million to one shot. what do you think?

Emergency and provincial government services up here in Nova Scotia went 800 Mhz last year, most of it is just trunked systems. The RCMP however went with digital encryption for ALL their coms.Everything is that way,all data feeds to the cars, two way comunications from car-car and car-dispatch and even the cell phones that some officers have are digitally encrypted. As a scanner enthusiast I must say IT SUCKS! The codes are set at random by an algorithm and are indeed SUPPOSED to be impossible to crack. They also said that about DTH television.I guess time will tell but so far I have not even heard a rumor of it being cracked.

Lots of systems have gone or are changing over to trunked systems. The frequency hop and voice scrambling can be added. Some are even digital.

But since you say you hear the dispatcher tell them to go private and it sounds like SSB, my guess is that they are using a frequency inversion scrambler. Boards are available from different companies. The one I seen a lot makes add on PL boards too. I think they were called comspec?

Frequency inversion mixes your voice with a steady tone then filters out one of the sidebands. Then it transmits that over the air. On the receive side it mixes it with he same tone and filters out the difference frequencies which is your speech. This is one of the easiest ways to scramble speech, but still a lot of different possible frequencies to pick from, and they may change them a lot.

hey thanks guys, skiptalker,QRN, this was so old i forgot about it. after checking with a local deputy i found out that our county is using digital encryption. and you're right QRN, it does suck! everything good that you want to hear is jumbled up. i did find a web site that sells descramblers, but haven't tried to order one. $80.00 is a little more than i need to hear.

.

thanks for the info,
