Yeah, I know... but you can hook it up like a mobile rig. I know HT's are really short range, but you can get some longer telescopic antennas that work quite a bit better.

I have a Dragon SS201 handheld (an older version of the AE-2990AFS), 3 watts, with a 50cm long whip antenna, and I have been making contacts out to 3700km when the bands are open. The only extra thing I do that really helps is to attach a 9ft trailing wire counterpoise.
Yes, It's a challenge, but it's great fun.
