Might work to dim the Christmas lights. Anything that draws a significant amount of current thru it will make it heat up. There is a safety issue and an efficiency issue. If you overlook that the voltage would be all over the place with a dynamic load.

    Google the term "auto transformer".

That is actually the generic term. Variac was a brand name.... And it just stuck.

My favorite thing I found at work was at an old folks home that the pool equipment electric kept tripping the breaker it had a bad motor upon repairing it I noticed a single wire running through a piece of conduit followed it to an outlet in pool area they used the conduit for the neutral no ground.....

It is a thermostat. The long centre probe is the temperature sensor. All it does is simply turn the heating element on or off to maintain a certain temperature. this is evident by the light turning on or off to indicate when the element is on or off as opposed to on all the time but at variable temperatures.

You managed to hit the space bar and the final periods several times quite well. Perhaps if you s l o w e d a bit typing. It REALLY does make it hard to read and separate thoughts into different sentences. Especially for tired old eyes.

Something INSANELY cheap...for the protection it provides.... is a lightbulb limiter (Like Shadetree used!). Use them a lot in amplifier repair but, anywhere you have things with electrolytic caps, or youve done a recap, or have suspicions that something might be shorted internally..... this takes all the worry away.

I misunderstood. I thought he was going to try to use the heating element as resistor.

I am sorry I pissed people off. I did not realize how sensitive some of you are. I am sorry. It was not on purpose.
