I don't think john boy had a problem with alcohol, he did work hard with his dad and grandpa, and survived WW2.
Mary Ellen married ( a doctor maybe ?) and her husband went to WW2 and never returned...she found him many years after the war but he was never the same. Mary ellen remarried.
As to the mower, there was one, an old push type no engine, and i remember an episode where one of the kids was mad at someone else and he ran over the flowers that she had planted
