when you contact every state on 10 meters

is this a contest or a personal thing ive been listening alot to 10 meters so when i get my general ticket on the 16th of march I,ll have a small clue. the other day seemed like there was a contest on every other channel seemed like only one person was trying on each channel to make contacts. how does all this contesting work somebody learn me please i will be contesting when i get my ticket but dont really want to have to learn the hard way,how does the points work do you have to sign up does it cost money,and what do you win.with my jogunn 6x6 beam and my rci 2980 i can hear a whole lots people on 10 meters thats for sure thanks to anybody out there that try,s to help me out on the info......

Ditto on what 2IR473 said. And the folks on 11 meters think CDX'ers are hogging a freq or 2?
