Which radio?

Hi everyone.....I'm looking for a 40-channel radio for my SUV to take on highway trips just to get traffic and bear trap info. I've narrowed it down to the models below. Is there a significant difference in the range I could expect from these units or any other major performance differences? If so, do any standout as the clear winners or losers?

1) Midland 77-285AXL (this one was discontinued but still available, any known issues?)

2) Uniden 520 (really like the small size, but worried about performance?)

3) Uniden 68

4) Cobra 25

Thanks,

Big Red

The Cobra 25ST with "sound tracker" will be the best at cancelling auto noise interference while still a decent receiver and good talker with a tuneup.

The 285 will have the best ears if you can deal with the hash it picks up.

The 520 is the bang for the buck but alas does pick up alot of noise.

I'd got 25st or 68. Call 1 Stop and see if they can hook you up with one and a basic tune-up on it.

A friend of mine uses a small Midland on vacations, and keeps it in the glove box during other times. He has a Wilson antenna, and can talk about 1.5 - 2 miles at best. He says that he normally can get out about 1-2 hill tops, which in East Texas is about .5 miles. So let me suggest something.

The only drawback to the Midland 77-285, is the modulation control. There is a mod (which canbe found online) that allows this radio to have a higher deadkey and modulation. The problem is that, other than that mod, there is not a lot that you can do with it. It is a very nice radio, and I know many people who like them.

Or you could get a Cobra 75 WXST. This way, you can mount the radio under the seat, and hide the mic when you don't need it. If this keeps you from getting out like you want, you can always add some power behind it like a Palomar 100 or Galaxy 80. Both of these models will fit in very tight places easily, and draw very little amperage.

If you don't want to go this route, I suggest trying to find a Magnum 257. These radios are compact in size, and will allow you to get out well. The price is going to be somewhere between $140 - $220.

Another radio to consider is the Uniden 68XL or 68LTW or the Uniden 520. For a compact radio, you can't find one much better than the 520. The RF gain is a big plus as well. The 68 series has ASC, which helps eliminate the noise, without causing problems on the transmitting side. The 68 is built like the old Cobra 25. I like these models better than anything Midland, Cobra, or Maxon offers.

As far as noise is concerned, the more expensive the radio, the better the filtering will be. However, I seriously doubt that you will have that much of a problem with noise. (unless you are driving for a Ford) I do suggest an external speaker, though. The speakers in the compact radios are really too small, and leave a lot to be desired.

I know I didn't just read you recommending a Cobra 75wxst, David. I had one of those radios. That is the worst piece of junk I have ever owned in a radio. The receive was horrible; I couldn't hear something a block away. Another problem was that nobody seemed to either know how or just didn't want to work on it. Stay away....................

Big red,

Make sure you have the radio aligned. Also known as "peak and tweak"

adjust the antenna for swr's

I agree, the 75 leaves a lot to be desired. However, if you put a Palomar 100 with a receive amp behind it, it isn't entirely horrible. I don't care for them myself, but they are perfect for small locations.

Thanks Big Red, we try and be a helpful bunch here for sure.

The 520 just does not have the features that the others do, but it is a good radio for it size. Make sure and have it tweaked and peaked, and some good guys to do it are the boys at 1 Stop Electronics www.1stopelectronics.com

They will help you out with all your radio needs and are a great bunch of guys to do business with.

i would go with the 25 or the 66 if it were me......i don't think the uniden 520's are as good a radio as the other 2......peaking and tuning will make those radios even better.....and like Charger said........try 1 Stop Electronics

Well, not only would you enjoy the Cobra 29 better, but when it comes to resale, you will get more out of it!! And also, the sound quality is better, and if you get it Peaked and tunned, like what most people do is clip the mod limiter and drop a 1969 final in it (More power). but, it all depends on how big you may get in the future?? If you plan on getting a linear then, keep the cobra 25, BUT if you plan on using it a couple of time's and throwing it in the closet, then get a cheap radio!!!!

Also , i cant stress this enough! Get a good antenna and make dure the SWR's are Good also, because if you get a $400 radio and a $20 antenna that will not tune down, thebn you just blew $420 bucks!!!!!!!!! Have a good one, and let us know what you decide!

The Midland can be converted to 6 bands of 40 channels, and the receive on it will blow the 520 out of the water. It is also a ery nice looking radio. Spend a little more and get the Midland, you won't regret it.

Been awhile since messing with a 285... Eddy, aren't these rxers as noisy as a 510? If it's better then I agree that's not a bad idea.

RR, the receice on the Midland is not as noisy as the 520. The ESP-2 noise cancel circuits actually work in this radio, unlike the 79-290 which the noise blanker is non existent. The 285 has a switchable blanker which is impessive. I picked one up on ebay for my friend because he wanted more channels and I didn't want to go the Cherokee CM-10 route. I was very impressed with the 285, and that comes from someone who owns 2 of the 79-290's. The 285 is really a sweet little AM only radio. I think Midland overpriced them when they came out and that hurt them. The Uniden 68's and 78's are about 40 bucks cheaper than the Midlands so that was probably the demise of this radio.
