Why? an export instead of a CB?

Help me out here. Why do some people prefer an export 10m radio that has to be converted to a regular CB? It seems that the only advantage is that it puts out more power, but if you're going to use an amp anyway, why pay the extra money? I'm honestly asking because I want to know what they offer over a regular CB. I'm still trying to decide what to get.

It's cool to be able to "slide" inbetween channels on regular 40.

It's cool to be able to go a little above or below regular 40 and talk quietly or shoot skip.

It's cool to listen alot above or below regular 40.

It's cool to do FM sometimes.

It's cool to change the lighting colors on the ones that have the LCD displays.

It's cool to have echo and talkback built in radios sometimes.

Exports are just cool. I'm very diverse with adjectives aren't I?

Wow,that was a cool explaination,But Rolling is just a cool guy to begin with.

It's cool to say that you have a 3300hp

It's not cool to say that you have a cobra 29 nwst

It's cool to have a cool looking heatsink on the back of your radio

It's not cool to have blown up finals

It's cool to have a built in freq. counter

It's not cool to have to use a funny chanel road map

Galaxy is cool

Krako is NOT cool

Cool?

Cool!

I'm back out (cool if by choice, not cool if "put" there!

I think 'export' radios are 'cool', too, but I don't really care if the radio goes above 28.000 MHz or below 26.000 MHz. First of all, I have not found too many antennas that have acceptable SWRs at the extremes of these frequency ranges and (yes, I realize 'freebanding' is illegal), I'm not licensed to talk on those frequencies, anyway. I have found about 1 'band' above and 1 'band' below is all I ever use.

I think anything more than that is just bragging material, anyway. I also have found that 'stock for stock' most converted 10M radios have worse adjacent channel rejection than any CB that costs more than $50.

I guess to each his own, but I have no problem with the concept of a 'channel map', for most of the time I work without a frequency counter and simply memorize where I am, anyway. The math isn't that hard. Heck, for that matter, my export rig has no freq. counter, either, but I know where I am on that rig, too.

Get yourself a radio that you like and don't worry that you're friends may not think it is 'cool'. I've got a couple of older Cobra 29s that sound about as good as ANY 10M rig manufactured these days. It may not have echo, delay, reverb, Mr. Roboto voice and all that, but by golly it has incredibly clean modulation and you can't hear the guy across town on channel 6 when you're talking on ch. 1.

Whatever you choose, enjoy it.

Well if your into echo go for it..But I sure would not buy a radio based on that...(I find it most annoying) There are several reasons to buy an Export the foremost being most, not all are of higher quility than most, not all CB radios.....I agree I hardly ever go more than 1 band above, or more than 1 band below....just my 2 cents worth......Tom.....

Re: if you go with export you can have a howl lot of fun

::sigh:: We have met with several occasions with Jim Peng, JR, and several others from RCI, and several other engineers from RCI in National City, CA. in fact, we have several photos with us in them to prove it. Almost all, in fact I can't think of one off the top of my head that doesn't have a filter for 54Mhz. I keep seeing a rant and rave from this guy about harmonics. Harmonics are only one small part of the equasion. Yes, radios generate harmonics...can we please move on? Every transmitter of any type of amplifier AC, DC, AF, RF generate harmonics!!!!! If you actually take the time to run a spectral purity test, you'll see that most of the radios that you are talking about are still down by at least -35db. NOT BAD CONCIDERING that most HF amateur radio amplifiers with a PI or PI-L network are down by about -35, to -38db or so. Check out Ameritron's website, and check out their specs. Yes alot of Cb'ers do operate things incorrectly, that's why it's CB, anyone can connect a radio and amplifier and go with no concept or a very brainwashed theory of how RF circuitry actually works, get a wattmeter and see a zillion watts out of a IMD splatter box. If you're going to sit here and post after post after post talk about connecting low pass filters to mbile amplifiers, and how a radio is generating harmonics, at least provide facts and documentation to back up what you are stating. I welcome everyone's input, but when it's down-right a statement, such as the sky is purple, without any significant documentation, or research, it gets rediculous. Once again, I agree, a export radio with a disabled AMC isn't the cleanest radio in the world, in fact far from it. Keep in mind, many AM transmitters don't have an AMC circuit by design.

Instead of going on and on and on about harmonics, why not discuss something like an export radio's wide receiver bandpass, or extremely high gain in the front end, and IF filtering that is way too wide? How about some solutions? We already know that a good ol' truckdriver special galaxy doesn't compare to a Harris, or an Icom 7800, Yaesu Ft-1000D, etc, but we're comparing oranges and apples here.

Some things about exports that I don't like is the horrible quality control, and horrid receivers. I have talked with RCI, who by the way makes and manufactures galaxy, ranger, connex, mirage, virage, and many others, and offered suggestons for these problems. They will do nothing. So I come up with creative ways to correct some issues, like a gasfet for the front end, lowering the gain in the 1st RF amp, narrowing up the IF stage and increasing gain there.

My point is, let's keep it postive on the forum, please. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

Justin
