Hello All,
Wayne( EDUK8TR ), CDX 787 has been working on a project to help Jim, CDX 44 with his radio.
Jim is Vision Impaired and it is difficult for him to operate his radio due his disability. You might have seen Waynes post looking for a cat interface for a Yaesu 757 hopeing this would allow Jim better control of his radio.
Here is a copy of the Message I got from Wayne:
Jim lost his vision in a auto accident. He is almost completely blind. He has a "sliver" of peripheral vison in his left eye which he can on occasion can use to focus and "see". I was thinking that maybe a computer interface would enable him to see the freq. on the monitor in a very large font. The freq. up down buttons on the 757 only go in increments of 10Hz and don't always move with each push of the button. For him to be able to change freq from 27.475 to 27.476 he would have to push the "up" button 10 times and each push would have to register ( which doesn't always happen). I really wish that the 757 had a way to change the span of increments like my HR2510 & 2600. That way I could set his span to 5Khz and he could change freg in those increments. Jim had me program the memory for certain freq's, but even when he goes to those freq's he can't use the clarifier when in memory mode. There is a way to be able to clarify but it involves several combinations of button pushes to come out of memory mode and then back in, that are better suited to a sighted person. I thought at one time I might try to get some help from ARRL but since Jim is "Freebanding" and is unlicensed that would not be a good idea. Mostly I help Jim out by checking up on him. He pretty much stays on 27.475 LSB and a few other freq's that are programed in. When the club has a contest, I go and set the freq. in one of the 757's VFO's. In the upcoming contest I'll have to set the two freq's for him in each VFO so that He will be able to switch between them and still be able to clarify if he needs to. I was just wondering if the CAT would be of any help in Jim's situation to give him more freedom and independence in the use of his radio. Jeff, If you have any suggestions let me know.
I have not used any software or the CAT interface, so I don`t know what it is capable of, if anyone has, please let us know.
I have have been looking for a "voice synthesizer" for his radio, but so far I can not find one that will fit the 757.
So, we are looking for any info that might help Jim with this Problem.
Software? Interfaces? Anything that would be of help.
Thanks
Jeff
