I got some screws/things coming to fit and secure the 891 in a FAT5 can with 2x 10AH SLA under it. Head will be on lid. Tuner will have to be external as space constraints. Can is setup for my Kenwood TM-v71a but can be refitted for the Y FT-891.

Second option is the HF Apache 3800 case. Interior is 14 7/8" x 10 5/8" x 6 1/8". The white paper shows the interior size of the 3800 case. Use would be open the case, pop the front leg on the 891 to get a decent view of the screen and VFO. MFJ-939Y tuner would be under the rig. Case would be open during operation. Holds 2x of the 10AH SLA also. Last pic shows 891 leg up. I would drill and install a PL-239 passthru for the antenna feedline and power port for charging the SLA or other batteries.

Other option is the Apache 4800 case.
Tuner/Radio/2x 10AH batteries side by side. Case interior is 17 7/8" x 12 7/8".

Thoughts. Anyone else doing or have done this with this rig?

I'd measure one of those 50 cal. ammo cans. Could modify some foam for softener. Pop the top lay on the side horz. Could also construct a rack out of drawer sliders, making easy access. Wish I still had my cans. Used them for storing welding rods. I'm sure you can find dim's on line.

FAT 50 is 8 3/8" deep, 11 3/4" long and 6 7/8" wide. I have a FAT 50 can here.

The 891 with out the head and using a 90' coax is about 9 1/2" long. Only 6 1/8" wide. The head with knobs adds 1 5/8" to the 9 1/2".

I'd like to also keep the 2x 10 AH battery in the box to.

I may be wrong. The can I was thinking of is much larger. Looking it's the 25mm.

Here is a mock up of the 4800 case (the bigger one noted earlier). I ran out of red. But the 2 batteries on right hand side are within the interior of the case measurements.

Thinking I will detach the head since the box is 6 5/8" deep and set on top of the foam or something. Keep the VFO knob further than the 3/4" or so I got on the front edge.

The next option I saw is the 22" Ridgid box at HD for $29. It's 22x13.75x6.5 supposedly. Have to grab a tape measure and get the interior size. If it is then that may be best option as the width at 13.75 beats the 4800 case by 1".

Well I found a 25% off coupon that was expiring at midnight yesterday. I ordered the 3800 case I did the first mock up with. $37 shipped with taxes and all. Also looking at Anderson Power Poles and such for this project. Should make connections quicker.

I would rewire the pigtail connector (and obviously the radio connector too) to have the POSITIVE lead be inside the rubber insulator and the ground be on the exposed metal pin.

YMMV

Pic 4 and 6 will be the in use pic. Pop up the 891 and start transmitting.

I will be disconnecting the radio DIN during transport to avoid damaging it.

Mic drops in that back area pretty well and case closes fine. (Last picture) Had to cut the eggshell part to prevent crushing the mic cord too much.

Waiting on power pole wiring and jack. And the S0-239 passthru connection.
