It's all about the specs. Not every meter uses the same combination of current and voltage. The meters in most CB/10-meter radios take a quarter or a fifth of a milliamp, 200 or 250 microamps to read full scale. The resistance matters too. Not sure what's typical for the factory meters. Hooking the external meter in series with the built-in may work better than connecting it in parallel. Without knowing the external meter's coil resistance and sensitivity, It's a crap shoot as to what it will do. Easiest series connection would be to unhook the negative wire from the meter. Connect the + side of the external to the loose end of the built-in meter, and connect the negative side of the external meter to the ground where the internal one was unhooked.
Haven't tried this, just educated guessing.
