PL?

I'm trying to program the memory for this repeater and so far managed to program the freq and uplink freq but I have no clue what PL is or if it stands for anything.

"Home to the W6NUT 147.435 Amateur Radio Repeater - Great Radio in Los Angeles
Input: 146.400 103.5 PL - San Diego Simulcast: 448.940MHz (One-Way)"

I'm assumeing it's ctcss code but don't really know what Yaesu calls it in the book.

The PL is your sub audible tone that allows you to enter the repeater. It is also known as [FONT=Arial, Arial, Helvetica]CTCSS .[/FONT]

Thanks. I guess I was on the right track and now have to figure out how to program it for that freq's memory slot.

I think having a radio to program is helping me figure out how it all works. Practice if you will.

PL is the Motorola Abbreviation for "Private Line".
QC is the RCA abbreviation for "Quiet Channel".
CG is the General Electric abbreviation for "Channel Guard".

It's all the same thing....CTCSS

Or the newer digital tone coded squelch pretty much does the same job as CTCSS, but with digital tones instead of analog....

We have had trouible this past year here in Central Wisconsin with one of the city of Fon Du Lac repeater it was all the same as a micigan or illinois repeater so they had to change there PL tone here it was crazy on a good day you could key up and it seemed 2 - 3 repeaters would open thats the purpose of our PL tones I guess LOL

Yaesu tends to say 'ton' or 'ten' in the menus.

On their displays you have 'enc' and 'dec' generally too. enc is 'send only' you pass the tone to get into the machine and listen to whomever might be on the output. This is almost universally required on repeaters. dec means you are both sending and listening for the tone, so if the repeater doesn't pass the tone on the output (many do not) you will not hear it.

The advantage of dec is, if the repeater does pass the tone, you won't hear interference as easily from other machines on the same output during an opening. Makes things a bit quieter and it's nicer if you scan as well.

On rare ocassions, generally when people want a repeater 'closed' they will have a PL for the input and a different one on the output to confuse people.
