OK i dug out my trusty old 2510 that has not been used since the mid 90's all seems well it transmits and receives well, the only problem is on SSB and the meter in RF mode the meter reads full scale but transmits fine.....now if i lift of the top cover the meter reads normal....swings up when i talk ??? but when lid goes on it goes up???? now like I said it works fine but it just bugs me, if cover is just loose sitting there its kind a ok but when I put in screws up goes the meter and only on SSB? anyone? I have tightend all screws for board I have never seen this before?

Maybe try to see if all the screws holding the circuit boards to the frame are tight. My old 1 did that and it took 30 seconds making sure everything was good and tight.

Thanks Binrat, yeah i did go over them and they all seem tight....for some reason it seems like it at the back of the radio as if i lift the back of the cover the meter goes down and swings normal when talking??? Oh well i will try and figure it out.

Look to see if there is a mica insulator behind the mrf 477, if it is not there, unscrew it, put a light coat of heat sink compound on one and slip it behind the transistor, snug it back up and see if the problem is solved.
That has been know to cause a ground loop problem with the radio and make it do weird things.
Another known problem that makes the radio do the dead key/weird meter deal is the two 38 Mhz pull off caps across the final on the solder side of the board.
They are 2 small caps, ( c 124 and c125 ) wired in parallel and soldered very close to the board, lift one side and see if that stops it.

Put the case screws in one at a time and see which one is the offender. You may have a screw that is too long maybe or touching something inside that shouldn't be where it is.

Thanks for the tips there guys, will try these when I get home from work to night and will update with the outcome.

so if this stops the problem run the radio like this or replace them caps???
