For the past couple years I have had an LG flip phone, one of those locked into a contract things. Nothing special but at least it made and received calls and had a voice-mail box set up and did everything I wanted.I never texted with it other than maybe a dozen times in the couple years that I had it as punching a single button three times to get the letter L or four times for the letter S just did not appeal to me. Besides I have seen far to many people completely absorb themselves in their texting. Anyway I have hated that LG Wine series phone for a while now. Just as the warrenty was about to expire the side buttons quit working. It was repaired under warrenty. Less than a year later they quit working again. I could not adjust settings for volume, ringer etc without jumping thru hoops and menues to get where I wanted to be. Next the external display went out on me which left me not being able to see who was calling me before answering the phone. This was because getting into the menus to change how the phone was answered was a pain because the side buttons did not work. I found out I was eligible for an upgrade on Monday past so I went into the store yesterday to get a new phone. Note this was one day past the eligible date. I wasn't waiting any longer. There I found a Motorola XT860 Superphone and fell in love with it. My only mistake was listening to the wife and not getting a data package with it however I did get texting as it has a real slide out keyboard and is a snap to use.The wife texts a lot as do both kids.Yes, sadly we are a four cell phone family. Last night I was looking over what the phone would do and concluded that my first mistake in this deal was listening to the wife about not getting a data plan. I went online and switched my plan to a 1 Gb/month plan which I will never use as I am not online on the phone all the time like my kids are. I am sitting here now playing with the damn thing thinking "Holy crap! What this thing won't do is not worth doing anyway." If the power goes out I can still use my laptop on battery and link it wirelessly thru the phone as a WiFi hotspot and still check stuff online with a bigger and better screen on the laptop. Lots of goodies and applications and and web browsing and more and more and more.......

Now I find myself asking myself two questions. First, Oh lord what have I gotten myself into now, and secondly, could it be possible my wife was right about it being a bad idea to get a data package?

Remember you had find a pay phone Remember the pager, pay phone.
Finding the wifi hotspots.
Now it's all there.
Only if you find yourself in places where there's no wifi and you just need to browse, play or maybe not missing that important bid on new radio equipment, that it's nice to have a data plan. Sure it may not always be fast in the best location, but it fixes a habit. :D
Wow, we sound like someone on drugs, don't we. :D

Hey, I remember having to carry the simple pagers that went BEEP....BEEP...and you called into the office to get your message. Then came the pagers with the display for the callback number. that was a big step. Then came the old cellular precursor, the Auto-Tel mobile phones. They operated on the old 150 MHz mobile phone frequencies but you did not need a mobile operator to connect you. You just dialed and pressed the send button and if , that is IF a channel was available the call would go through. Now that I look at it I don't mind the new "drugs" at all.

When I was hauling horses I had a wireless card for my laptop, which was mounted on a JottoDesk, so all I had was a simple flip phone which would make/recieve calls and I rarely carried it anywhere excpet in my truck.

When I started up at the truck plant almost a year ago, I got knicknamed "jitterbug" after the jitterbug "senior" cell phones, so I had to break down and get an iPhone because texting across the plant is normal procedure. I hated it at first, but I carry it every where now .... what are ya gonna go

I am using a LG Ally (however you spell it) long story short.....before it was over, I now have an unlimited Data package.
I am glad I did it when I could because they way I understand it they soon will no longer offer it, and because I got in when they did, I am good as long as I keep renewing the bloody contract.

I had a bag phone in the early 90's. I think 30 minutes of service a month was about $40.

Now I have the latest iPhone 4 and unlimited data, etc. Luckily the company I work for pays the bill :) Otherwise I'd still be using the bag phone!

That's right! Welcome to the 21st Century. (y)

Wife and I both have Motorola Droid X phones with unlimited data package on Verizon. (Grandfathered).
I have EasyTether on my phone so I can link the laptop through the phone when needed, great App.
Use a Motorola Bionic at work.
I am an old time Motorola user and fan and also claim to be a Droid Borg.

I told them at work if they ever tried to force me back onto a BlackBerry I would quit!

Four cell phone family here also CK.

Daughter just got her drivers license, ( interpret gray hair here) so with the unlimited data, text etc etc plan it also comes with the GPS tracker, I can get a birds eye view of exactly where the daughter is at any time she is driving the vehicle as long as her phone is on.

In the many father to 16 yr old daughter going on 22 years old discussions we have had her favorite saying is "Dad this is the modern age not the stone age like you grew up in".

So I informed her of the 21st century technology and the fact that I can track her every move when she is out driving around. Making sure she is at the mall she said she would be at etc. etc.

Told her even stone age men can understand modern technology.

I know what you mean about being dragged into the 21st century. I'm not much of a computer/tech/cell phone guy. I do have a computer, but it's pretty simple. I don't have a cell phone, I HATE THEM.

I'll be damned.

BAH! In my day we carried around briefcase-sized devices that weighed 10 pounds. They only worked in major cities and cost $3.00 a minute to operate, and all you could do with them was make a phone call.

To this day I still use only a very simple Nokia candybar phone. It serves my needs and that's all I care about.

Now you kids get off my damn lawn!
