SR-955 SSB problem

I'm pretty sure I've uttered a few happy comments about different things on here.
You just take things to personal. You are unable to handle any criticism on any equipment you own. Your just gonna have to get in line behind the rest of the people that have the ass for me.

It's a long line, so bring a lunch.

BTW, I've owned the 148, decent radio, but clearly nothing to soil my britches over.

I 've seen when M42Duster makes some funnies. He has helped steer me in the right direction on numerous topics. I tend to socialize and it shows by the number of my posts. I was wondering if and when someone would step in the poo.

Well there you go one of the best ever 40 channel SSB radios and you don't like that one either, you complained about the Yeticom Optima, you complained about the CRE 8900 you complain about every radio you have owned, your just a complainer so why don't you just design one of your own, get GoodWill to make it for you and make a ton of money selling it so you can retire and be rolling in big money

I think a few people on here would agree, that the radios you've just mentioned, have issues.

I don't get emotionally attached to my purchases, nor do I publicly express love and fondness for repair technicians. If I buy a radio and have an issue with it, I'm going to report it. Just because it pisses you off, doesn't mean someone else might find it useful. After all, I may save someone the heartache of buying one.

I've owned just about every export out there. I'm still waiting on a few to hit the market, when they do, I'll buy them and report my findings.

On the bright side, who else is going to buy these radios like he does and reports his findings on them? On the CRE-8900, I spent three or four months checking up on it before I sprang for one. My requirements didn't require using morse code and the other fixes for the 8900 have been found out. My CPU has stopped locking up and the stock mic has finally broke in right. I know my options for the 8900 because of M42Duster. Everyone is gifted in one or more ways. I tend to look for those qualities.

DUSTER you complain about EVERY radio you buy. Sorry but sour grapes just are not my favorite. The radio I bought from you I had one issue once and never again. Your just a negative person with an unhappy life. How about you go buy one of those Icom 2000 dollar radios and let us know what is wrong them that one too. What is it a 756 Pro II or something like that

(Added By Forum Admin, Lets keep the NEGATIVE personal comments to a minimum, 42 has just as much right to post his experience with radio equipment as anyone else, if there was a perfect radio for everyone, there would be no need for new models.)

To know how bad is your SWR, just put your radio on AM and set your power on 4 Watts and that's it.

Greetings from the Caribbean!!!

I can't even begin to list all of the HF rigs that I've owned. I've owned a bunch. Some of them were turds as well, but you don't want to hear me bemoan any of them, or do you?

I'll look into changing my username to complainer42 or sourpuss42, if'n that will make you happy and get your foot off my nuts.

the way he describes the way it acts
hes not very familiar with the functions
he has good swr but when when flips to upper and lower ssb the swr pegs

im taken a real good gues that hes flipping the band switch going 40 above and 40 below
you should here some of the folks say that they are going to go to the ham band and get away from the mess
and they say go 10khz
if they only knew

folks upper and lower ssb is not extra channels

SWR protection

I am sure there is a good reason why these radios can suddenly show hi SWR for no good reason. I am also sure that it has something to do with the way the circuit measures the swr in SSB. Something to do with the auto ranging of the SWR detection circuit not reacting quickly enough to the changing power levels of SSB transmission perhaps. Using an amplifier seems to activate the hi SWR warning more often than without the amp also. So Rf feedback may be involved as well. Even with hiswr turned off I sometimes get the flashing HISWR notice in the LCD but at least the radio does not shut down and squeal like a stuck pig as it would if the protection was on. In my situation it has occurred with every rig like this so I just disable the particular protection circuits I don't want in software as I reprogram the radio with 5khz steps. All radios have their quirks and handling this is just part of radio....
I am going to try the new M8900 and the new Anytone AT6666 and the lincoln 2 when they come out and I expect they will also behave in the same manner at my station. And I will disable them too...No worries mate!!

ok been away from the computer for a few days...

1 first install was with 10 ga wire straight to battery so I'm thinkin the cig lighter has nothing to do with my problem

2 I know the difference between USB, LSB, and "uppers and lowers" (upper 40 and lower 40 from cb band)

3 actual SWR should be the same no matter what type of modulation is used. Though I guess reading that measurement can be difficult if the chosen MOD has no carrier to use as a reference point

4 SWR was checked on AM with an MFJ 818 and a DOSY TR1000 and the radio... all had same reading

Hooked up the MFJ 818 again today and tested the SWR on all modes with the radios SWR protection circuit turned off. Again AM works perfectly. But when keyed with no modulation on SSB the MFJ 818 shows 20 watts forward and 20 watts reflected.

^^ ab v c^^<can not stand it>

Try it with another radio. If it does the same thing with another radio; then there is something wrong with the meter. In SSB mode, you should see no watts with no modulation.

Can you get a radio check from a local and see if SSB is squealing when keyed?

Just for giggles, did you try a full reset?

Usually on transceivers i know of that in SSB mode if you set your meters to show wattage then when you modulate in SSB it will show forward swing, just not anything when set to show modulation.
