Tin roof?

I just had a 12'x24' shed built in our back yard and was thinking about putting a small radio station setup in it, but my only problem is it has a tin roof. Has any one out there every encounterd this and how did you overcome all of the metal? I can't run huge tower in my neighborhood, but I may be able to run something around 20' and use an antenna that isn't too wild looking. I was thinking something along the lines of a Sirio Tornado.


Also I'm not going to be running huge power through the antenna because the neighbors house is about 20' away from where I want to put my antenna if I do a small tower.

Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated!
 

A 'tin' roof isn't a draw back, necessarily! It'd make a very nice 'groundplane' for an antenna in the higher HF range such as 10/11 meters. Of course, being under it means that your transmitted signal is also closer to your radio which can cause problems, maybe. But it isn't necessarily a problem!

When I had my K40 antenna on my car roof,the roof kept the noise the iPhone made from being picked up from the antenna. When I moved the phone to the outside edge of the roof my radio would pick up the noise through my antenna. I think there would be shielding to a certain extent(tin roof). Just saying this for a comparison.
 
Funny I would regard a 12 x 24 metal roof as an asset not a liability.! Good platform to work on, plenty of commercial tripod mounts to suit ,easy to secure guy wires braces etc , can be used as a ground plane if ant is mounted on the roof . One of the best low impact ants I ever built was a 1/4 wave mounted on and in the middle of a metal roof .Ok some ants may need to be raised a few extra feet to work , but nothing you can't work around. Also never hurts to have some rf shielding between you and a low ant.Of course if you are talking about mounting under the tin then your in trouble. Can you explain what the problem is ?
 
I was thinking it would cause major interference. I'll get a pic of it and post it up.

I was thinking about a Sirio Tornado but I'll look at the IMAX 2000 too.
 
Maybe a room under that tin roof with aluminum foil backer membrane?
I was thinking about aluminum coated perforated cardboard sheets my parents have on the attic floor. That alone kept the north facing bedroom from getting so cold in the winter. I wonder if something like that can be installed behind interior walls if you so choose to enclose your radio shack. My question is,"will this stop RF from getting into the shack"?

We put some of the perforated heat shield in our living room and will be doing the attic this winter. Pretty cool stuff but I can't remember the manufature name off the top of my head.

I will more than likely put some type of insulation in the roof if I follow through with the shed idea. I could put a di pole in the attic of the house and just run that for now. That would be the easiest and cheapest way to go to get a base up and running.

I've got a di pole that I made a while back and let me just say its very crude. :LOL: I just need some PL-259s to put on some coax I have.

I guess what draws me to my shed is the tranquility. haha!
 
Well all the radio talk got me motivated..... I just hung the di pole up in the attic. It's a single story home so it isn't too far up there. It's facing ESE and WNW.

I'll have to make a trip to Radio Shack to pick up come connectors now. ;)

Now what I really need to do is score a RCI 2970dx and find a power supply! I'll be set for a while then!

I'm studying for my HAM Tech license so this could be a big month. Haha!
 
my garage is a 30x50 metal building and in one side I have my radio area. the antenna is a maco V5/8 antenna and it is only about 10 ft above the edge of the roof and only 5 ft above the peak.I have great reception and it gets out great. swr is flat and at my other home I had a 20x20 carport and had the antenna on the south side and I talked too the north very good.

That's what my father says too. And a lot of other people. Not me. Too damn much noise. I like it quiet. I wake up in a rain storm and wait for it to finish so I can go back to sleep. I used to be able to sleep thru a war but since having kids I got used to sleeping with my ears tuned in and one eye open. Sadly that started almost 17 years ago and hasn't changed. :cry:
