Picked up a 959 Galaxy for 130 bucks and a RM Italy 203p on my vacation this weekend. I got the radio for 130 and the amp for 40. Both units are brand spanking new. The Galaxy still has the plastic on top.

How do y'all think I did? Good deal or bad?

Good deal if all is new, the radios are running right at 180-200 new, not sure about the amp but I would say for 40 dollars if it is new and works you did just fine. Now you can send the radio off to a good tech and have it tuned and aligned and you should have a nice mobile setup. Good luck and god bless.

We'll I guess I didn't get a smoking deal but the amp is gonna be perfect for the base. I'm probably gonna get the 959 tuned up and put it in the truck and take the road talker out of the truck and use it as the base.

I just need a power supply for the amp and I'll be set.

HY is out of stock anyway. So if you were buying new and didn't want to wait, you saved $35 on the radio. You got a pretty good deal on the amp.

Here's a not so good update. The radio won't transmit.

Receives great, I can hear my self on the talk back but when keyed up it shows nothing on my external meter. I texted the guy I got it from thinking he wouldn't respond but he actually did. He's not sure why it doesn't work because he used it twice before he put it in the closet and he purchased it new. The radio doesn't have a single scratch or scuff on it. It literally looks brand new. I just wished it worked like new now. Lmao

Meter doesn't work either. Didn't get to test the radio because I had no way of doing so. The girlfriend didn't commit to the antenna on the roof of her brand new car so I was SOL. You live you learn. I'm not afraid to admit I bought. A radio untested. Won't happen again! Haha!

Any idea on why it won't transmit or what to look or under the cover?

I've been there too. Sorry for your misfortune. Was the guy you bought it from knowledgeable about radios? When he "tested" it, he did know enough to use a tuned antenna or had a dummy load? Because my first thought is blown driver or final.

He was CB savvy but I wouldn't call him an expert by any means.

Can I test the driver or final? Or should I just chalk this one up and send it off?

When I key the mic the RX/TX light changes color, the lights dim.. (like its drawing some current) I hear my self in the talk back and if I'm on 27.185 and key down the meter jumps to 27.186. I was reading about the TX adjustment so I'm not worried about that at this point. Just want to get it transmitting.

If I should send it off, who would y'all recommend?

Thanks for the help

First, check all the functions, is it in PA mode? Check sideband? I betcha it is a virgin, never been tuned, they are paper-weights from the factory. Do more testing though, what kind of ant.?

I've tried it on AM, USB, LSB and isn't in PA. I've switched every switch and turned every dial that's on it. I opened up the bottom and nothing looks like it has been cut. The AM high power pot wasn't even close to being turned wide open. I didn't set anything different from how I found it, only checked to see where things were set.

Edit. I've tried it on my Di-pole and of course I tried out my new Wilson 1000 mag mount last night. SWR on both antennas are equal or less than 1.3:1 any where in the band.

I am curious about that statement. SWR is a measurement of the forward power compared to the reflected power, due to impedance mismatch. If you have no output, then you should read 0 SWR as there is nothing to reflect. If you are getting a reading, then the radio is producing output.

Are you using the radio's internal meter to read your power output? The Galaxy Radios have a "PWR, MOD, & SWR" selector. Is the selector switch in the PWR setting?

Yeah I see what you saying. I guess I was a little vague on the SWR. I checked the SWR on my Dipole with my Realistic 465 with an external meter and I had to tune the new Wilson with my Uniden PC78LTW with the same external meter.

I mentioned that the internal meter didn't work earlier. It doesnt move no matter which setting its on. :headbang

EDIT: is there anyway I can test the driver and final myself??

Also I called a local CB guy just to see what he had to say about the situation and he was saying that what ever final was in it the new one had to be the same part. Basically I couldn't mix and match the finals.. Is that true?
