has anyone had a radio built by lesters customs?

I think we have established the fact that the radio is not what you expected and what you paid for. Just work on either getting your $ refunded and just sell the turd to recoup some of your loss...

if it were that easy id have done it already, i had to go thru paypal to get a response from him, and i couldnt sell someone a piece of crap like that knowing they would not be happy and come back to me

First off, you asked LesComm for a 959 radio. You should have known better before you diss Les because of your own choice. I can see that the 959 has a problem with the receive, which he should fix.

The squelch is to adjust the threshold of the scan feature and the squelch level itself. He even pointed that out in the video. That works like it should.

As far as audio goes, I run a 959 as my daily talker. Have modified the audio circuit in both transmit and receive for hifi and it constantly get unsolicited xlnt audio reports using just a Silver Eagle mic. Six caps is all it took, as well as a careful alignment using a SINAD, sig gen, and a scope.

As far as the power output of the cabinet 175 on the 959, it is spec'd for no more than 175w from the git go. If he was saying that it was putting out 500w, he was not not thinking clearly at that moment in the video - is all.

All CB SSB radios drift to one degree or another. Nature of the beast. However, all Galaxy radios drift more than others because of the design itself, with little that can be done about it, as ExitThirteen has pointed out. But I have yet to see a Galaxy that didn't respond quite favorably to a proper alignment. One of the few radios available today that talks as well on AM as it can on SSB if aligned well.

Running a radio that has two 2290's into an amp that has 2290's just to see ~400w is not the sharpest thing that I've seen, but I know that a lot of people do it that way. Does not mean that it gets what people think it does, as the final amp is being driven into distortion and will die sooner or later. Of course, most people that do this are more impressed with seeing the meter bounce high rather than understand that most of that power is actually distortion and actually is being spread well above and below the freq as splatter, no matter how clean people think it sounds.

Just some thoughts; there are more . . .

its supposed to be a sx 350 power cabinet i went to a radio shop had it checked on a dummy load it spikes 20 amps is all so i was charged for a 350 and got a 175 course i cant break the seals but id bet money on it, and the channel board the more i played with it the more i learned how biga pos it is too it drifts so bad on ssb its basically unusable, sure i can keep paying shipping @50 a whack and back to put a little more polish on the turd? I can expect to actually have the radio when? (several months more) yeah well screw that.

i paid to see and i saw a piece of shit

that cobra beast i have in that box i want nothing to ever happen to a good friend built it when i made that vid it made me emotional and so weird i may have said things i shouldnt have but that song playing and the amazing audio coming from that radio he made was just too weird god bless you forest i remember you wearing your geek magnifying glasses thingy telling me stuff about gold wiring and stuff that made no sense at all to me making this radio you were truly the master hands down that was 21 years ago and how you said about the receive audio quality and by random chance that idiot on 19 playing music and that song wow

If Les put in the wrong cabinet; then he should refund the difference.

It is possible that the amp has been blown, so that it is only putting out a partial output; that would explain the 20A draw - too. Another possibility is that the power cord to the radio has been compromised.

I really do understand being disappointed with a purchase and know the experience well.

EDIT:
There is absolutely no way that a sx 350 power cabinet will get 500w out without frying it. They are not like bipolar-type transistors, like a 2290. Nothing wrong with MOSFETs either, so long as they are operated well within their specs. 300w would be the limit I would use one at, just to be sure the signal was relatively clean and that the MOSFETs are not being over-heated and then fail.

the radios receive is my biggest issue it was horrible looks blingy on a video trust me my friend they seem cheap and junky in real life. You know how you can tell a good radio by the way it just turns on? then on other hand you an also tell a crappy one by just turning it on? well other than the cool way the channel board comes on (really is cool) it has that turdesque quality feel if that makes sense

Robb he made me a vid of the radio said my name and all showing it doing over 500 watts and even saying so watch yourself

the color was red for some reason once i ordered blue plainly now for another 50.00 round trip shipping i can get it fixed? lol omg i should just keep it hang it on the wall by my computer in case i get anymore ideas to buy so called super radios off the internet lol

A few years back, people were buying the new RCI 2970DX-N2 radios that had the RCI/MOSFET power cabinet. Of course, the first thing that people did once they got the radio, is turn everything up. A radio that would do ~160w from the factory was now doing 240w - WOW! But, not without consequnces.

The radios were then dropping like flies and everyone blamed RCI/Ranger for it. But the problem was, that the shops or private individuals that turned these radio up were clearly at fault. A MOSFET is very inexpensive means to make power. But abuse it just a little, and they will fail. Everybody stopped turning up those amps, and the problem stopped too.

your absolutely right the guy who built my cobra always said that its only like 15 watts other guys get 25 out of them, well......they did they died long ago this thing can talk all over the country on 15 watts or maybe its a little more on ssb its funny that thing receives like crazy and if you can hear someone you can talk to them with no amp. ever had one of those radios that werent no power house but just spot on? ive had and still have many radios more powerful than the cobra that simply wont touch the cobra at 15 watts i know that sounds crazy but its true
