ok, i got 2 bone stock hr-2510s. only the channel expansion mod done.nothin else. when i talk on side band after i quit speaking (while still holding the mic key down.) the radio will hold a small carrier about 1/4 of the peak watts.???? wtf. if i let up on the mic key the meter drops to zero watts. when i key back up its on zero till i modulate. stop talking while holding down the mic key and small carrier stays till i unkey. its almost like its on am. both of these stock radio do this. the doc tune 2510s i got do not do this. is this some factory thing to prevent the total loss of carrier on ssb. ive tied different mics. mic gain clear off or down and it still does this. ONLY IN THE STOCK RADIOS.

Needs a tune-up.
There is a pot on the board that adjusts the carrier balance for SSB. I'll bet that on either LSB or USB - one will be OK. If one is OK and the other isn't; then the carrier balance is out of sync. You can DIY - but if you aren't aquainted with the board and don't have the service manual - and you are squeamish about it - then forgetaboutit...Send it to Doc, Doug, or Sparky...

Two cents worth...

rob, tried the radios ob upper side band to see if it was like you said. same thing. it will modulate to about 22 watts then drop to about 10 watts till i let clean off the key. both of these stock radios got about a 9 watts dead key on am. ya, ill send them to doc before i start messin with stuff.

ok, did some trial and error. just bought a new texas star dx500. took the amp out of line and the radios stopped this wierd carrier on ssb. drops right back to zero like it should. i run a alpha delta antenna switch backwards to run more radios. i had the amp set up where it comes out of the antenna switch to the meter to the antenna. hooked my radio up directly to the amp to the meter and it funtions as it should. wierd but i guess anything can happen. guess ill just use it with no antenna switch.

What kind of switch box is it ? I've seen cheaper type switch boxes cause this. In many cases , a better built quality switch box won't cause this problem.

I had read a post somewhere that there is a faulty trace near the finals on some 2510s. The cure was to remove one or two screws near the finals that hold the board to the chassis heat sink. Then hold the board with hot glue. There was something about the proximity of ceramic capacitors on the trace side of the board.....
This has not been confirmed but Rogerbird would know best....

Pesky feedback you cannot hear. A trick that worked for me is having a good grounded wire, strip about 4" off one side, and wrap that around a pl-259 somewhere in your transmission line. Not right at the radio, but maybe after an antenna switch, amp, meter, whatever. It also dropped my stray SWRs. A phenomenon called "ground loop feedback". Just my 2 cents on a six frickin year old thread!hr2510.jpg

Now that's funny :)

Be Nice,..
