I see where LesComm has figured out how to get an extended frequency range on the Uniden 980 ssb rig. Trouble is ... good old Lester is too selfish to share with the rest of us how he did it. What's the matter, Les ?? I remember when you were in the Navy and the editor of SECRET CB, and how you used to make mods you developed public knowledge. Wassa matter ... No mas ??? Come on, man. Share your 980ssb freq mod with the rest of us so we can enjoy dxing on 27.415 to 27.785 with our 980s. Eventually someone else will figure it out, and then they'll end up getting the credit. So give it up and make yourself a hero. Thanx and 73s.

this video is about 2 years old.he shows the clarifier mod for it but still does not give the channel mod.this was floating around about 2 years ago.

was he using them to make money back then?

Maybe he was, but he still showed those of us that had the skills how to do it. I would like to make $$$ from the mods I developed, but living here and as old as I am precludes that. I just feel like anyone who shows the mods they have figured out should tell the techs out there how it's done. I know you operate that way, and so do I. What is the point of keeping something secret anyway ?? Like I said, eventually someone else will figure it out, and post how to do it. Then you will lose the credit for being the first one. It just seems silly to me to keep a mod secret when others could use it to communicate back to you.

but the video is out there, many people have seen it and no one will believe someone else saying they were the first one.
i'm just saying, he might be surviving off the radio money now, old as he is. as opposed to using it for a little more spending cash.

As soon as he sells one with the mods and the frequency counter attached for $500 to someone then the mod will be out. With that mod looks like lots of messing with the clarifier everytime you flip the switch. Not ideal but I'm sure it will do the job, I'm sure he'll get it more refined the more he messes with it. Seems like more trouble than just buying a Lincoln II but I guess if you love the 980 that much then maybe you'd want to do it, but if you love the 980 that much do you really want to hack it up and place a FC-390 counter on top of it? Too bad it can't be on the original display. :)

Actually the radio that is most like the Uniden 980 is the President Grant II.

If you scroll thru the comments of his video, you'll see where he admonishes someone whom complained about modifying a CB for 10 meter. He replied about how hams have always tinkered with CB's for use on 10 meters, myself included. So, in keeping with his reply, then he should willingly share his find. Instead, Les is thinking commercially. Kinda like the dudes that took over HRD. $$$ makes the world go by.

Uniden doesn't even make the 980 anymore. Moot point, really.

After watching his video it does not appear like his "discovery" is any where near ready to be installed on customer radio's. There is the display on the radio and then the external counter, it's almost like he figured out how to fool the processor a little but can't get the radio to show the upper/lower channels. Only on the external counter. All in all it's a start I guess.

A guy on YouTube, mark19960 has hacked the computer-to-display and pll data communication format.

Be aware that there are two 980 radios. Just different enough on the inside that this hack is different for each version.

It's not a product you can buy, but Mark's process does demonstrate that the bad old days of wiring toggle switches to a PLL chip are gone forever.

Hacking the internal data communications of a computerized radio is not for the faint of heart, but Mark does show that it can be done.

Worth doing? Very different question.

They're controlled by firmware burnt into the CPU damn near permanently. While Les and mark have figured out how to bullshit the CPU to a degree, Less is right. Once you cut power, It defaults to the firmware. Uniden wanted to make these "truck stop proof" and they found a way. I seriously doubt they'll ever do what people want them to and stay that way while being mobile. Unless uniden develops a leak which is unlikely. Between being CPU controlled and SMD, Good luck.
