357 ........
Those photos you posted above in Post #1 are actually my photos that I sent to HyGain to complain about a new Penetrator 500 just purchased.
I sent those photos and some complaint issue.
They asked me what parts I wanted replaced. I gave them a complete parts list of everything I wanted replaced on the new antenna.
They sent me all new tubing sections and parts that I requested. They did not want any of the original parts back, They told me to just keep them.
All of the new parts and tubing sections fit much, much better. I was good to go after that.
I figure that someone was not being very diligent on the day they fabricated the tubing sections the first time.
And I also do have an original, brand new, 1982 model Penetrator 500 antenna still in the box, never opened, in my collection of antenna stuff .....
And I also have another original, 1982 Penetrator 500 (new, out of the box in May 2016) that is currently in service.

Very good.

So the "new" model is still up?
Any arcing, cracked plastic yet?

thanks!

Keep the power down and any arcing probably will not occur ......
Cracked plastic insulators ? ...... time will tell .......
I have made my own replacement insulators that will not ever crack or let any arcing occur.
I use PTFE rated for 500V/mil of thickness. It is good for electrical and RF insulating .

357,
Have you given upon the Imax 2000?
I'm still mulling over my options for a vertical.

you slid it over the radiator at the bottom?

Bite the bullet, pay the price and go Zero-Five.

Zero-Five Antennas ..... Colossal 10K 5/8 Wave 11 Meter Antenna
Yes, I have one of these also currently in service. It is one heck of an antenna.
It is very beefy and extremely well made.
It has a narrower bandwidth than a Penetrator 500.
500 khz bandwidth versus 1 mhz on the Penetrator.
But it will tune very well to the center frequency of your choice.

I have found the insulating weak point to be the top insulator on the Penetrator 500.
It is the point that causes the VSWR to increase when the antenna gets "wet" .....And I have also had arcing at the top insulator from the vertical radiator to the horizontal elements bracket.
This is the point where I fabricated a PTFE insulator ...... I made it longer above and below the bracket to help insulating when the antenna gets wet. Doing this solved my VSWR issue when it rained. No more high SWR reading.
