Where to source a replacement Toko LA165?

To All,
One of my many fleabay scores is sick. It is a TRC-452. Cool little unit with an 858 chip. I think I have $7.00 in it (for my own entertainment and brain exercise) counting the purchase (with free shipping!) and a handful of new electrolytics. It does receive and has transmitted a handful of times (with shockingly very loud audio and swing) but I have tracked it's transmitting issues to a frozen/cracked ferrite insert in the L2 position-triggering the IS (Instant Stop per the manual-what a HOOT!) I can't seem to locate a new LA165 or technical specs on this tuning coil either. It seems Toko is now Murata and their parts search page is not very friendly or forthcoming.

I do have a couple of dead ones that are standing by as organ donors-one of which is an EPT295013Z chassis(with too many lifted traces) that has already given up his DC power socket so that a Kenwood TR7800 may live and a chassis mount S0239 and a couple transistors so that a TRC49 (Pro-Niner) may live.

Strictly looking at color codes of tuning coils, the 2950's L17 is white as is the Trc452's L2. Not sure if this means much? Although the L17 from the 2950 is a smaller package, I am sure size can be overcome. Where there is a will, there is a way!

Any and all help is much appreciated. May be time to troll fleabay for more deals (with Free Shipping!)

A quick look at my notes says LA165 a 16 MHz VCO coil.

The color coding doesn't indicate which ones you can interchange, most of the time.

L17 in the 2950 does pretty much the same job and at the same frequency. I don't have a cross-reference to confirm you can sub it for the LA165

Might work.

Nomad,
I haven't studied the 2950 schematic but just a quick peek this afternoon at the board revealed the "white" coil. It seems I have seen some literature recently showing color codes of tuning coils but really can't remember where I saw it???

Maybe it was here:
http://pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/82880/TOKO/E544ENAS-100011.html

I guess I have nothing to lose by trying it. Best of all no shipping on these parts!

Thanks for your response.

Check out Ken's Electronics. On their coil page they list an LA165 but show sold out. Lots of times if you call they have them but never updated their site.

https://www.kenselectronics.com/lists/coils.htm

Scroll down until you get to the LA coil section and find LA165. They list them for about 5 bucks (which is a lot for a 7 buck radio.) If they still show sold out, give them a call and ask. Worth a shot.

Ken's cryptic cross-reference info on his catalog page suggests that you could use a "12017" coil found in any of a gazillion RCI-built radios with pc board numbers that start with EPT3600. Sometimes that part is marked without the first digit '1' as in "2017".

Gotta measure the inductance of that one one of these days. Used to be able to get Toko-made 10mm coils like these from Digi-Key, but they disappeared after the lead-free fraud 12 or so years back.

Many of the 'cans' like this with a tuning slug will contain more than one winding. This one contains just one winding. Only two of the five pns are connected to it. The other 3 pins only serve to hold it down.

If the only problem is a cracked slug, there's a trick that's worth trying. The underside of this coil is open. The undamaged slotted lower end of the slug can be adjusted from there.

But only after you unsolder and remove it from the pc board. If you back it out from below, and remove the broken fragments thoroughly, you can now flip it over and thread it into the hole from above. If you were careful enough getting it out, it may now work if you reinstall it.

Worth a shot too. PLL board comes out first to access the solder side of the coil but has to be done to replace the coil or flip the slug.

I did check Ken’s page a week or so ago but never called him. It may have actually been on Memorial Day-time flies!

Kens is a 1-1.5 hour drive from my home depending on traffic. I have been there many times. He is nice guy. I am not sure if his mom is still alive but when last I saw Ken she was and I think she was in her 100's at the time or darn close. She was still riding a pedal trike daily. Small world!
