Opened up a recent acquisition to be greeted with what's in the attached photo. In case it's not clear, someone decided to replace a blown trace with a bare wire. Best practices would dictate fixing the trace. Common sense would dictate that you at least use an insulated wire. This "tech" must have thought electrical isolation was for sissies.

The radio has a few other problems (microphonic, a bit deaf) but this little bit of WTF'ery I wanted to document. It explains everything else I'm going to find with this beast.

Don't know where you got the radio. And doesn't really matter.
Here, Tim at Snake Radio will get the blame.

But you’re the destroyer of radios...

I’d fix the trace but some cheapskates won’t pay for that so I use a wire also but I use Teflon wire.

My favorite thing is opening a radio to see the wires taped up for the meter light and very shoddy soldering job hiding under the tape.

Such as :

Not denying it. Earned that title the hard way. Then I fixed it.

I usually only see that quality of work on patched AC power cords.

I see it all the time. There’s a radio shop not to terribly far from here, they put koolaid like that in almost every radio they touch.

I remove koolaid. What gets me the most about that, every LED light I order comes with leads long enough to install directly into the board. No need to do such crappy work so I don’t know why they do it.

Hahahahaha, blame Tim for it. That’s funny.

Snake radio did up a recent vid wanting to sell off a radio that would only squeal - that was the radio in question.

There's your trace jumper in question - Why so long? Have no clue...

He says he re-capped it but all it did was squeal - and squelch and volume were ineffective.

To give him credit - the issue may have been from the customer dropping off a radio to get it fixed, didn't like the estimate so moved on - he was trying to sell that for $70 on the "bid" off of Youtube - I can't find the reference anymore so it's your baby now...

It may not be work of Snake Radio, but with any used radio you take chances on others works. a customer of his that didn't need the repair or wasn't attached to the radio took something in exchange and instead Tim sold him another and he's trying to recover the exchange cost of discount for parts...

Not to defend anyone but some techs do slip on the qc at times they test the equipment 1st to make sure that is the issue with a quick fix and forget to apply the real fix.before it goes out.

My two posts above were done in good humor. :)
Hopefully, we can leave Tim out of this thread (He's in enough others already) and get back on topic. We don't know he ever laid hands on TM86's radio. Could've been anybody. Could've been the guy with the small shop behind the Tasty-Freeze in Idalou, TX. The ice cream business closed years ago, but I hear he's still there. (y)

If it will keep from starting another T*^ or S#C thread, I will gladly take the blame for this one. I have big shoulders!

Just no more of those ugly 3 letter words Mom warned about! Wait…….how many letters in Mom? Aww crap!

Oh it's ok, but I do find it interesting how what goes around comes around - dealing with one problem child or another.

Like I said before - I've had radios where I had to undo all of the work done before, to fix that, then recreate the original condition and then fix that, then see what the customer wants.

By that time, in light of all the work that has been done to it either by the shop or another tech from "B.F.E" the guys already killed his credit card on another purchase and has moved on in life to like an older iPhone 6 or something of that era..

Does NOT say anything (not to accuse anyone) about the customers PREVIOUS work done to that radio was a botched job from someone else.

So to say "tim" was all over it would not be proper, even if that was the case...there is always the "customers previous dealings" variable...

BTW - Spell mom - upside down - you get WOW

That looks exactly like some of my work that I did with my dad’s blow torch when I was 6 years old, used acid core solder too. I thought that if dad could use the torch for patching cattle tanks, wires should be a cinch. It was the start of my learning process and I was lucky enough to have a dad that let me do those things at an early age.
