Mobile Forgive my question, I'm lazy!

So, I'm trying to plan a bit on a project.

My questions are:

1. When an antenna on a car uses the steel in it is it the body panels or the steel in the chassis or both?
2. Does aluminum body panels work as well as steel?

That will be good to start off with!

Thanks,

It is all the metal but basically the more surface area the more of an effect so therefore the body panels have much more effect than the frame or chassis however it all works together. Vehicles with fiberglass body panels can present a problem with tuning an antenna as well as have poor performance. As for the question about aluminum, it works just as well as sheet steel. It is a metal conductor and that is all that counts.

OK. Good stuff.

I've given up pretty much on a Corvette (figures my two loves of the fiberglass wonder and radio since childhood are near mutually exclusive).

I've posted about the Corvette specifically but wanted to ask without poisoning the well so to speak.

So, now I'm obsessing on a late model Camaro and where to mount. I know the center of the roof is "the best" and I'm not obsessed much with looks or resale but I'll probably not mount it there.

I'm pretty set on a Sirio as my current one has been really really good. (Sirio performer 5000) http://www.sirio.store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_19&products_id=180

I guess my last thought is, if you were building a "rat rod" .. basically a frame and and drivetrain with no body - would that end up being nearly as bad as a fiberglass body?

Slow night here in Seattle.

Cover top of frame with aluminum sheet. Attach body as required. (No idea, really, couldn’t resist. Quiet in Hot Springs. Waiting for shop to open in morning, get the Pete thru early).

Yes, this idea has been floated and I'd be lying if I didn't spend a bit of time every week thinking of how to best lay out that sheeting under the hood, roof.

Maybe the dream isn't dead. (n)
