After years away from the hobby, I picked up this rig a couple weeks ago. I’m kind of a stranger to good radios, so it doesn’t take a lot to make me happy. Spent all my time on AM in my previous endeavors. My SSB experience was limited to a SS3900, which wasn’t fun. Everyone always told me I was off frequency, and I spent all day trying to tune folks in well enough to understand, only to have the radio continue to drift.

So far I am liking the Lincoln. I actually didn’t know SSB could be this easy. I’ve made a bunch of contacts, all barefoot and Mobile, and more or less don’t touch the clarifier.

There’s almost too many ways to change the frequency, or channel if you prefer. I’ve settled on using the memory, where you can put pretty much anything in and in any mode and just scroll through with the channel buttons. Works for me, with the few freqs I’m currently listening to. Anything else I punch in with the knob.

Output power puts me in a strange place. I’d like to pair it with a dx500, but the output power puts me in a pickle. To drop the am carrier to under 4 watts has the rf power knob fully CCW. The same setting leaves SSB anemic. To have the SSB pep at 20 watts or so, that setting on the rf power leaves the am at 10w carrier.

I don’t care so much about the am, but if I rely on memory to adjust the rf power when switching modes I’ll cook the amp in short order.

One thing I don’t like about the radio is the ASC. I’m a static listener, so I generally run with the squelch completely off...but when I switch to am, that’s the position for ASC. And it doesn’t seem to unlock reliably with even the strongest of am signals.

Anyway, so far so good. But still wondering if I would have been happier with something in the 2950 series.

Yes, I got mine from Walcott for that price (plus the expansion). Looks like quite a bit could be saved if one went through Amazon and did it themself.

I ran my 2950 into my Texas Star DX-500 for years and it sounded great. You won't have any issues running that Lincoln II into it. The DX-667 is the low drive amp. Your good to go! Just make sure you have a good SWR.

I had a Lincoln II V3 (non-plus) that I used for about a year. I didn't have any problems with it but ended up selling it earlier this year to fund another purchase. Now I'm back (again) looking at the Lincoln II+ so I'm curious what sort of reports you get back on your transmit audio, as well as any other plus or minuses you've found out since using it.

So far, woody, I’m really liking it. I don’t have a lot of experience on SSB because all my previous efforts involved drifty cheap exports. Definitely not having that issue at all now.

So far, as to audio, everyone is telling me great things so far. I’ve talked only dx, some very weak and some very strong. I don’t seem to have issues being heard even with weak signals, and get great reports when the signals are stronger.

I played with both the stock mic, and with a D104M6B. I clipped the resistor in the D104, and with the gain at 3.5, they sound almost exactly the same. If I back off the mic gain just a touch, it falls off immediately, so I’ve been running mic gain all the way up.

Between the two mics the one difference i noticed is that the d104 is sightly clearer, so that’s what I’ve been running.

I also set up an old export at the house with a recorder running, and talked back home using both mics. I used this both to compare, and to dial in my settings. I am very happy with what I heard.

If I notice anything else that may be worthwhile to you, I’ll update.

As it stands now, will probably order another soon.

Thanks for the input! My circular path to the II+ was pit-stopped briefly to play around with a President Grant II while my brain wraps itself around the fact I have to pay tax on it now...

Woody,

I played around a bit again yesterday, I wanted to see how the audio was with my amplifier DX500V).

Anyway, I setup the portable shortwave for my wife. I drove 3 miles away and I had her record me. I worked the whole range of the radio’s output (about 5w PEP - 40w PEP on my meter), and then with the amplifier, from 150-500w (500w being about 20w input). She recorded it for me.

I was pretty happy when she sent the file, as I couldn’t tell one recording from the next except me saying what the power level was. But...I found out she has no idea how to use a clarifier...haha.

I need to do it one more time with the mics, and see if I can get a good recording to share with you. The shortwave sounds very much better than my export radio that’s drifting all over the place.

Once again - good feedback (tnx). You've given me ideas about testing the rig. I was wondering what you think about the display's readability. The display on my 980SSB is almost impossible to see during the day in my SUV so it will be sold once I get something I can see better. :(

Ok...let me see if I can fix it. I’m not a “YouTuber”.

Edit...I think I got it. Please let me know.
