QSLing 11 Meter contacts

Just started in October, have been mailing cards for about a month now. Finally starting to get some emails letting me know they’re arriving. I picture my letters in a half torn burlap sack being carried up the side of a mountain by a donkey...haha.

Finding contact info hasn’t been easy, and understanding the address can be challenge too. I’m getting the most from ClusterDX, then LF11, some from qrz11, and the rest from random internet searches.

The QSL manager system is strange to me...I’ve had to send cards to Italy for Suriname, Cape Verde and Brazil, to Brazil to reach Guadeloupe, France to reach Curacao and Uruguay...and etc. And many others are straight to the radio operator.

I’ve been sending a card, 2 green stamps, and a prepared return envelop...unless they ask for something specific.

Any advice for someone new to this?

Any significant resources I am missing?

I can’t log into LF11 either, but I can still view the database. Not quite sure how that site works...it appears that at least some of the cluster is republished from ClusterDX, but some is from direct entry.

You will like ClusterDX. Ocean One (ENC Pirate)turned me on to it.

Trying to sign up for ClusterDX and it keeps telling me that I am getting the validation code wrong. The code is something like "8+10=?" except the "?" is kind of goofy looking. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

It says I have two chances left. haha

Put the answer to the math in, instead of typing the whole code.

For "8+10=?" just type 18.

It's the same way with me on this end - have tired for the last 6 mo's.

The best cluster for 11 meters just shut down earlier this year, so I am just using the DX27 cluster now.

When you hear of a activation going on (say like 257 division) and if you make contact with them, the operator will give you your signal report. You write that down along with Freq./time/date, this will be need when you reply for card. The operator will give the QSL mangers call sign, then you have to find his AD on line and mail off to him for the card. Most of time you also need to send a SAE along with the $2 US.

When replying over seas, put your PO Box address on the back, not the front. You might also want to stock up on overseas stamps before the end of the year - price might go up.

I was really hoping you would respond, and I don’t think there are many here with your level of experience.

I didn’t know I was supposed to keep my own signal report....I have not been logging that.

I’ve been logging:
-time (utc)
-date
-call
-personal
-the station’s RST

I also try to make a note or two about the equipment or something to aid my memory of the QSO.

Any advice on solicitations from clubs? I kind of like being a loner, but I can see some advantages in being a club member also. The well established clubs seem to be pretty discriminate, while others seem willing to let anyone join.

I've never done this, but you've got me interested! (y)

If you really want to get into Dxing seriously, then you need to get into a club and one that will have their own qsl cards. You will really need to have QSL card and most of all a PO Box.

RC - Radio Charlie is a good one and there are lots more.
(a well know club will get you better response during a activation)
IR - International Radio is also a good one - I use to be with them.

This is my card - It's what they call the "Club Card". You can design your own card and have made, but it must include the "SD" emblem if you are in the SD club.

To be in this club, you must show proof that you have made 100 contacts outside your country.

Good info, Larry. So I shouldn’t be using my home address...lol!

Even though my call sign is invented (2NC995) I have had much better luck using something with a standard format.

I otten hear American operators using “123 in the Cornfields” and things like that, and when asked their division, they do not know. Pretty clear that hampers success.
