Just bought a brand new 955 for late night ragchewing on 28.370 usb. Wanted to free up my Yaesu FT-950 for working 40m digital while I chit chat. Radio is completely stock. Has great recieve and my gang says I sound about the same on the air end with good clear audio. My question is the audio output quality is pretty tinny and hi pitched compared to other radios I have. I have a hard time understanding weak signals cause the pitch of the voice is nearly the same as the static. Is there a way to adjust or modify the tone of the audio output? I have the Hi Cut turned on and it helps a little. I am using a Yaesu external speaker and the filters do not help much. It really needs more bass and mid. Thanks in advance for any help or advise......

Welcome! I run a 955 as a CB and unfortunately the receiver can be harsh at times. Maybe too sensitive, I run the RF gain at about 9:00. I have a clear speech DSP speaker that helps but I think my biggest problem is background noise from man made sources. I am interested to see others responses to this problem.

Howdy 'LCY :) I'd second what Shade said, and if you keep your eyes peeled on the QRZ or QTH For Sale sections you could pick one up at a decent price. While I've never owned a 955 I've had a couple rigs that had what you're describing and it's no fun.

Most of the newer export radios (Anytone, 955, Lincoln II) all have that same receive noise - they are noisy radios especially compared to an older HR2510, etc. Using the NB and HI Cut both help - you may also find that you can reduce the RF Gain slightly to reduce the noise while not hurting the incoming signal terribly. I've found doing this on the radios can make them more tolerable to listen to while not wiping out the distant signals completely. A DSP speaker or a speaker with tone control can help as well.

You can also adjust the receive internally to turn down the sensitivity slightly, but adjusting the RF Gain has a similar effect so I'd suggest giving that a try.

The newer radios are very noisy compared to the older radios but the benefit is they have very good receive and should be more stable on SSB.

Thanks for the quick responses. The issue I am having with the radio is not really the amount of noise on the receive but the tone of the sound. I would like to know if there is an adjustment inside or a component that can be changed to change the "shape" of the sound. Not sure id a DSP would help or not. Just want to turn up the bass!!!!

sp5it, I was typing while you were commenting. Would changing the BFO require more than just a "golden" screwdriver? I will search the schematics and see if thats a simple adjustment or a component change. Thanks for the direction.

I’m thinking MikesRadio did a YouTube on this model, but can’t recall if he did any receiver work. Could end up a dead end for you, but might be worth checking.

sp5it, I just found that as well. looks like I can do some experimenting in the test menu. I will just make sure to record the values before i start. AM sounds pretty good. I'm just spoiled by the DSP in my FT-950. But that's a $1500 radio vs a $300 radio. I understand the limitations just would like to get it sounding as good as possible. But for a 10m splatter box it actually does pretty good IMHO. Thanks for the tips!

Somewhat of a hijack...but how do you like it Shade? Worth the coin? I’m mostly interested in pulling very weak stations out of the mud.
Well it certainly is expensive enough. I got mine used off of EBay for $150 and it helps somewhat. It is good for cancelling repetitive noise kind of like a noise blanker. If you have local noise it helps. If the station is in the mud, unless they are right on the edge it doesn't help much. The audio is DX quality which means it is a little narrower than the radio. Probably not what the OP is looking for if he wants a full sound. I find myself switching back and forth with a regular speaker because I am not convinced on its ability to pull weak stations. If you turn the filtering up too high it makes its own noise like a waterfall sound. On signals that are already strong, it cleans them up nicely.

If AM sounds good wouldn't I wouldn't mess around with the internal menus. The high pitch is likely just a different sound that you are used to and nothing is wrong with the radio itself.

You are correct, a DSP speaker won't give you more bass. It will probably have less bass.

Light scrubbing of the schematic tells me they used the same layout as the Lincoln II. Being that I have a Lincoln II I widen the receive and swapped the 2nd IF and it sounds decent and close to my modded 2950 in terms of audio quality. Sensitivity is nowhere near the 2510/Lincoln
