Terms on Amateur Band...??

Language isn’t property despite what The Enemy teaches.

Establish squatter rights.

Terse and polite (if you want to get past civil).

Dime to a dollar it sounded different in 1963 (like everything else good).

What’s used in aviation is still a better model. (Copy the form).

I think Bob85 nailed it... signal and readability. Although I have NEVER heard anyone say that after a signal report. And Blackcat360 is correct... EVERY signal is 5/9 on a contest weekend. Again? Again, again? Prefix please? K5AB...? Ok, K5ABC, you are 5 and 9! :ROFLMAO:

The publisher niftyaccessories has that line of booklets you’ve seen which condense op-instructions for HAM radio models.

Has several other more general purpose booklets.
Which may serve your purpose.

Inexpensive, and, as no one has too many books on their shelves in this age, worth the small expense given the nature of your question.

Disputation (is far more friendly) if we disagree about a source versus the other man’s statement.

How to Think, be it on operating a Yaesu XYZ or with vocabulary is worth more than button/dial description and a list of operator terms.

The DX Manual is where I’d start.

Dig thru the offerings of other libraries. History, is always context.

Once edumacated, be confident in use.
Stay that course and others will adapt to it.

Me? I’d be looking to historical accounts and re-vivification of antique or archaic terms if I found them useful. The hobby aspect of Radio is emotional. It’s reality is far broader and deeper.

Words are themselves shorthand. Avoidance of stock phrases is (should be) a given. Clarity is work. (Spirit). Yesterday isn’t today

Handle on vocabulary isn’t formulaic (past broad guidelines). Make yourself a list of guidelines. Op parameters. Logic, is that which stays between the guiding lines (which themselves may not be parallel).

Word by word isn’t the thing. The framing of a doorway is at stake.

Exchange of numerical indicators is simply the doorbell.

It’s in opening the door that radio is near-miraculous.

(Where language reaches highest expression is still circa 1620. KJV, or The Bard. Exchanges on radio may be vocalized dits or dashes, but
much else is presumed. Work that presumption).

If it is that reality comes down to but Sound & Light, then Radio is concerned with using the former to convey the latter.

The pairing is a great responsibility. Which I believe your question asks.

1). A stage play concerns itself not so much with action, but understanding.

2). Great voice actors needn’t be seen to impart same.

3). Cadence, is thus much the thing.

The movie, Dr Strangelove, features an airplane crew of truly-gifted voice actors. The culmination of human logic is what gives their actions bone-chilling realism.

As much of this is over ships radio, give it a review.

Change only the delivery.

Are you a fat, tattooed, tee-shirt-wearin’, TV-watchin’ doofus?
Boobus Americanus? Generates only random noises as substitute for being alive?

Or are you someone upon whom the world may rely?

That choice settles the What & How.

“Who”, is in what the TX is given.
(As Creation is moment by moment.)

Im prolly wrong but i use plain english, codes are like morse code. People are too lazy to talk . Go to hospital ,go to er in ic with a md and pys and obtain lots of B.S..
If asked how is my signal i reply your loud and clear or just exactly how you are sounding

Not everyone has a signal of 59, I report what I hear and see on the radio's meter. A blanket report is easy to say. I have recieved 59 while having to repeat my callsign 3-4 times.

Thanks for keeping it honest Binrat, I do the same, and while it's great to get a glowing 59 report from another station, when their signal is 3-6 and give me (with an indoor mag loop) a 5-9 I really have to wonder  'cause it happens all too frequently....

Whoa...
I almost hit the Post Reply when a one additional comment registered in my foggy brain:

IMHO, the most honest signal reports I've every received (as a ham op) came while using cw (y)

I have wondered about some of the reports given, but often realize the difficulty of sorting out a call is not due to the strength of signal and audio quality. It is often because in a pileup there are numerous equally strong signals who fail to wait for their opportunity and continue to transmit when the desired contact is asking for clarity from a single station.
I get a lot of less than 59 reports. I don't like them, but, oh, well...

I'm not a ham, but I totally agree with the statement TO LAZY TO TALK. Back when I first started in the oilfield you would get a report to read during the safety meeting....while working on the mud pump xyz happened resulting in a 3 gallon spill of oil base mud. Now the same report reads like this...while working on MP xyz happened resulting in a 3 gallon spill of OBM.
Oil base mud =OBM
Synthetic oil base mud =SOBM
Trip out of hole= TOOH
Pull out of hole= POOH and so on, and so on, sometimes you're scratching your head trying to figure out just what the heck they're talking about.

Honesty is good. The fake 59 has fueled the popularity of expensive crappy antennas. In lieu of the number system I prefer piss weak, good copy and strapping.
That sounds like my rating system for coffee but need one more which is "DAMN!" and you start looking for a can of open paint stripper thinking that's where this came from.

Wally, when I roughnecked the driller or tool pusher just said, "Who spilled that #*+&~^%# mud on the ground!"
