WestMountainRadio ClrDsp feedback

I have one going on about 2 months connected to my Cobra29LTD. Does it work ABSOLUTELY. It does make a difference being able to copy someone in the hash or not being able to copy them. If I was doing an Eham review I’d probably give it 4.5 out of 5. On my station it’s on all the time, not something I turn on/off. Mine is being run through a Kenwood KES-5 external speaker.

Slowmover loves his but I think he has the one with the DSP and speaker not the stand alone DSP. I’m sure he’ll be along shortly with his expert opinion based on real life experience.

Thx NightThumper,
What's a typical noise level/floor for you and does it help with copying weaker signals?

I've read all of Slowmover's posts and I know how crazy he is about it but I don't need the speaker.

The KENWOOD KES-5 is very nice, but it’s not quite the same quality of audio as the WMR unit (DSP off). Close enough not to worry over unless speaker amp wanted.

Both speakers built for reproducing voice (computer monitor or home theatre are not).

— “Might be” that WMR has a buy & try policy. That’s worth it to examine integrated unit.

— I notice that plenty of radio shacks treat audio as a neglible concern. No attempt to use desk or room walls (or floor covers) and other audio treatments. All of which have to do with perception.

A radio monitor isn’t offering information, it’s lending understanding. Big difference.

Given that reproduction hasn’t been an afterthought (ignored; no research), I’m obviously a DSP fan who endorses their use.

My livelihood and whether or not I make it home alive may very well depend on understanding.

So, yeah — despite those who’ve reams more knowledge than me on radio theory and practice — there’s a difference between the guy listennng to air band and the guy flying the plane.

My sole strong recommendation is: fix the shack.

The only this I hate about it is.... It's very slow to start working. After you unkey it takes a good 5 sec. To fully start processing the signal
The bhi dsp starts instantly

The older BHI I tried I couldn't stand because of the delay when you'd unkey - the static would flare for a couple of seconds before coming under control again, drove me nuts. I'm guessing the newer stuff has solved that issue.

My typical noise floor is S-3. The DSP unit reduces the white noise by I’d say 1/3 so yes when you remove that it makes copy on weak signals easier. Because it’s on all the time I tend to forget it’s even on.. All that being said there’s nothing like a radio with a nice receiver like my IC-7300 and Lincoln II +

I think Slowmover is right about the WMR speaker being better. If I turn the volume all the way down I can just hear the DSP processing in the background through the KES-5 speaker. I’d like to try the all in one unit to compare it to the stand alone. My favorite speaker is my Icom SP-41 which is outstanding with it’s built in filters and allows me to share two radios with one speaker as it has an A/B switch.

I haven’t noticed this. Would be a HUGE irritant while mobile. Is yours the inline module?

The integrated speaker really is for mobile. I see some VERY nice station speakers in the Amateur catalogs. Then I’d be more interested in separates (no space restrictions).

But I’ve three (3) mobile installations comprising work, car & home and space is at a premium.

My experience re highest quality radio is with the Lincoln II+. It’s an astounding change from a well-sorted CB. Almost too good (as the sound cues via noise go missing), so highway operation actually becomes harder — ironically — since distance and direction of travel (other vehicle) are no longer intuitive as before.

Big truck antenna limits exist. DSP sure helps. But some radios almost too good.

If I was always west of Big Muddy I wouldn’t sweat it. Not enough traffic or big cities (except Texas; I won’t run IH-5).

To borrow an audiophile term, I’m ALWAYS inside the soundstage as the DSP speaker is overheard by a foot or more. Left shoulder. Understanding is those smaller accompaniments to words we all make. HOW spoken.

Any speaker is better from there.

But the WMR unit is flat uncanny.
