School me on SSTV on 14.230Mhz ...

I was monitoring a local SDR on 20m and viewed something I've never seen before ... a call sign displayed on the waterfall. How is that done? If it is only a function of the SSTV mode, could it not be incorporated into a voice mode? Like a roger beep feature that would ID the station at each key-up.
