The only thing I can find between too fiddly cheap and the $23 unicom cable is a $7 one on ebay, but it comes with a DB-9 serial connection instead of USB.

Yeah, why do they do that. I bouble a new Uniden BCT15X and it come with a DB9. So far, I've went thru 3 different USB cables, downloaded tons of drivers. Can't get it to work. It's such a pain to manually program. I guess there's still thousands of frugal hams with their 35nyrar.old PC's

Could it be the age of the drivers? I don't speak computer well, but I remember similar trouble trying to program my motorola m1225. Its been so long since that time, but IIRC, the only way I could get the CPS to work on windows 7 was to install some 16bit stuff called otya128 or wineVDM or something like it.

This is all I could find on my drive about it. Two VDM folders and an HTML with instructions. IIRC, I used the OTVDM folder because it worked better than the wineVDM one. Here is both and the HTML I used.

A word of caution. I have no clue how this will impact newer operating systems, so maybe use on an older machine you don't use every day or at least look into it.
