Funny, I was admiring how nice the knobs were, and he mentioned it at the same time. :) Can't believe how small the chassis is. Cool rig with some slick features... thanks for sharing, Jeff!

I have not used one made by him, but have always heard good things about them. My local club usually puts on a class a couple times a year, and we make the knock off of the Arrow J pole for about 25 bucks. It's a pretty solid antenna, and performs very well. Plans are out there to build one...
I took a trip last week and brought the QT-80 along. Channel 19 is filled with filthy language, skip shooters running power, people playing music, sound effects, etc. So much so that I couldn't hear truckers for traffic reports most of the time. SSB used to kind of filter these folks out, but...
What's funny about 40 meters (daytime) is that if you are too close, you won't hear the other guy. It seems like you need to be about 100 miles apart, or at least that's been my experience. I'm guessing you and your friends are closer than that to each other. I remember there being a pretty...
I ran mine in a Camry hybrid for a couple of years (it was my work car), and have also had the same setup in my F-150 Supercrew. My mount is in the front corner of the bed. Probably not the best mount for any antenna. The ease of tuning different bands offsets the inefficiency of the...
I've had pretty good luck on 40 with my Yaesu FT-891 and ATAS 120A combo. Running "barefoot" when daytime conditions are normal, I have been able to hit about 300 miles, with most people receiving me at S5-S7 for the most part.

I have heard the same as what you are saying... Wires X is easy, DMR a little harder, and D Star beyond ridiculous. I would seek out a club member for help if you have anybody near you. D Star isn't really popular in my area at all.

Agreed. I always enjoyed the exchanging of ideas here, and it stayed pretty civil. I look back at all the antennas that were available during the 70's, and Avanti really had some interesting products.
Hi Homer, long time no see! Not sure about the 40, but I have the QT-80 that I won here. I don't use a beep either, but fyi you can't hear the roger beep with the talkback on with the QT-80. You CAN program up to 8 different ones, with up to 14 different tones, along with infinite changes to...
One fella that might be able to help you out... on YouTube, look up Mr. Carlson's Lab. I think that guy has fixed every radio out there.

I didn't see any responses, so thought I'd at least recognize your post. That looks like a very cool old short wave receiver, and since it has SSB is even cooler. No idea on your issues... sorry!
I have bought several inexpensive SSB/SW receivers in the last few years, including Tecsun...
