Ok.. From left to right: Lo-pass audio filter on/off, Extra channels on/off, Extra channel bank selector knob, Freq counter with channel bank indicators below it, Modulation meter, Mic gain knob. There's also a 10-turn potentiometer in the clarifier circuit now.
The freq counter is not hooked...
She already works like a dream despite being a little rough on the cosmetics.
I'm gonna replace the Electrolytic Caps, the heatsink insulators & paste, clean the pots, check all the voltages & signal levels, and give her a good general cleaning. After that, I'm open to suggestions.
I like these:

I build them, rather than buy them, but these guys have a good design. Why reinvent the wheel? They have a 5KW rated version too if you like mo-powa..
Nightthumper, THIS is the best tutorial I have ever seen on how to do good reliable solder installations of PL259 connectors on coax. It was published in On The Air magazine, and I liked it so much that I scanned it to .pdf and hosted it on my site.
here is the link adress one more time...
Roadtalker 40 SSB Base 934.38270700
The seller says they can hear local radio traffic coming across loud & clear even with no antenna attached.
A little bit of info on this model:
These are great radios. I have one. These were sold around 1978, built by Hitachi for Sears (and JC Penny as...
Oh. Well, sorry for the misunderstanding.. If the AGC is not an all-digital feature, there may well be an easy way to delete/bypass it's effect on the transmit audio. Sure wish we had schematics. The radio has been out for quite a few years now. Anyone know of a place where they've been...
Ok. I couldn't resist. I'm gonna expand the range of the clarifier.
I know, I know.. The radio is useless now...
That's ok. I'm one of those guys who likes to annoy everyone by sounding like Papa Smurf or Darth Vader on SSB all the time. I also like to talk on SSB frequency slots that aren't...
Well, first off, from what I understand, most of the failed displays are on the earlier revision radio. There are 2 versions (The one with the screw on the back is the earlier version).
Second, with modern consumer-grade electronics, low-powered all-smt designs are pretty much the order of the...
So far, I have unlocked the clarifier and added a Frequency Counter.
It has about 2Khz of slide up and down from channel center..
What's next???
You tell me.
Open to all ideas/suggestions.
Yeah..In the end (in this day & age)if what your into is truly range & accuracy, you might as well just rip out the analog crap and drop in a DDS VFO that incorporates an encoder wheel for fine adjustment..
Awesome post, Andy.. Well, that's bordering on the limits of my analog circuit theory to try to fully understand everything that's going on there.. It's intriguing nonetheless.. I wonder if it would be possible to produce that circuit on a tiny pcb using all smt components for the purpose of a...
