WHAT KIND OF AMP IS THIS?

OK.Seeing is believing! Looking at the photo there can be no doubt.Don't know why there was nothing on the web on these. Now I just have to figure out what kind of tubes it takes. It didn't have any in it when I got it.But,Hey..I really appreciate the help on this!Alex.

Suicide Ride gave you the tube types that will work in the amp. If I had to guess I'd bet it came with 6JG6's as drivers with 6JE6's as finals. Could have been different but I have seen many of the Super's with this tube complement.

Thank you.Now are there replacements for the 6lq6 tubes? I saw a page on Ken's electronics that says that the 6lq6 can be replaced with the still made el509(?).I guess there is a small pin mod you gotta do but it looks pretty simple.Any idea what the el509(?) tubes sell for?..er are they even any good? Alex.

This is a Scout amplifier.

The original tube complement was 4 - 6KV6A and 6 - 6MJ6 tubes. I had one that was all original, and that's what it had for tubes. I have heard of other Scout amps coming out of factory with other tube complements, though.

For the 4 drivers you can use 6JG6A, 6KV6A, and 6JT6.

For the finals, you can use 6MJ6, 6ME6, 6LQ6, 6JE6A, 6JE6B, and 6JE6C.

You CAN sub in 6KG6 (EL509/EL519) but you have to change a couple wires on the sockets to accomodate these. The 6KG6's also have more plate dissipation per tube (34W vs. 30W for the original tubes), so you'd get a little extra out of them.

Hope this helps!

READING YOUR OWN THREAD

I could've sworn I said the same thing 9 posts back, & Bionic Chicken said the same thing 4 posts back & even gave you a re-direct to my post...... :headbang

So much for guys reading their OWN thread. :censored:

more on dis dead horse

It is a Scout because elkin's used 1625 & 12dq6 tubes some 6dq6 but the frame is the same and the guy's name who built ESC amps was Ray Felts in elkin NC still fixes radios although his son is now doing most of the work(fact). I had a cb shop for years here in WV then in KY lots of ESC and Scouts around here i know a lot of truck drivers out of kernersville NC they said ray would talk about building an amp for you 1 day then maybe not know you the next(even if he knew you 30 years) where he got busted he was skiddish. just my knowlage on the history as it has been passed to me.

well its looks like a elkin to me, some dude in NC built that name elkin

Trust me, I have had 14 Elkins in the shop the last 4 weeks. And it does not compare. Been working on elkins for 20 plus years here in NC.

The amp posted appears to be a Super Scout. If it was mine I part it out. There are three transformers there that can be used in 2 and 4 tube elkins. They will bring about 85 bucks a piece. Any amp in this clasification is not worth the price of tubes these days. I just parted out a D&A phantom. It worked great. But can make more out of the parts and have satified customers.

I'd say it's the scout KW

here's a "super scout"

I found out that you can custom your SOS "scout".

Here's the link

Their built like tanks! Quality throughout & you won't need a "driver" (modulator, etc.), unless you want to replace tubes often! They kinda look like the newer Maco's in their layout, & the only "issues" I've had w/ either amp was the keying circuit. Changed to a TIP-31 trans. & "good 2 go" (y)

I currently own 2. Both are labled "Super Scout". 1 is built using 4 ea.- 6KV6A's driving 8 ea. - 6JE6C's (all tubes are matched Sylvania's from RF Parts), & the other 1 has 4 ea. 6JE6C's driving 6 ea. - 6LF6's (all tubes are matched, tall bottle GE's). Tubes in both are NOS, hence their home in a display case! The 10 tube started life as a 4 driving 4, but was sent back to the amp builder to have bigger Xfrmrs added & sockets changed, etc., etc.

190, I'd bet you're asking because of the current auction on ebay...., his claimed wattage output of 1400 is kinda high for a 4 driving 4, but you know how wattmeters are. Plugged into a 30A service, my 12 tube Scout does 1400, & the 10 tube will do 1800. I figure my Bird43P & 55's Bird (in his shop) are pretty accurate.

Anytime I see an "unmolested" Scout for sale, I try to snatch it up! I was going to bid on the amp, but I think the ebay police killed the auction.... , :censored:

Just my 2 cents....

Yes, as has been said already,it is a Scout KW.
Mine had 4- 6KV6A smooth tops driving 6- 6lq6`s...and back before I knew better, there was a JB-12 with a single 6BQ5 in front of that....with a Midland 23 channel mobile with the AMC cranked wide open as the exciter.
That set up was a real monster that got the attention of Several local Hams who proceeded to enlighten me on the effects of gross over modulation and splatter in very short order..gee I wonder how they found me?
It is a nice amp if it has good tubes and filter caps in it and you do not drive the snot out of it...and a very good paperweight if the tubes are flat/missing. Sweep tubes are just to much money now days...
