(y) Grats !!

Missed by 4 on the general test, that is really good for not studying on that part of the test....

And helping on that repeater is a good idea, will give you hands on experience as to how that stuff works

Dream radio, or used "get me on the air" radio?

I've done both.... $1000+ IC-2820H with all the bells and whistles, to $100 used dual banders. I have four now (Yaesu, Icom & Kenwood). My Kenwood TM-V71A is hands down the easiest to use as well as the "loudest" of any I've ever owned. I use a VERY busy So Cal repeater and the users that have been playing "power" VHF/UHF for years are ALL on Kenwoods. Either 71's or 710's. The kenwood audio is STRONG.

The menu system is so simple, it's the only dual bander I've ever owned that I didn't bother buying a cable and software for. Everything you need is easily accessible, not buried in the menu system. My 2820H on the other hand is a serious PIA, and something as simple as a PL tone is buried 3-4 layers deep in the menu system. The D-Star is all but impossible to program without software or a LOT of time on your hands.

The Kenwoods are the best crossbanding/remote base radios that I've used as well. Almost no detectable squelch tail, where the Icom's & Yeasu's make a loud & long "crunch" when you unkey.

If you do your homework, you can get a new V71 for $369-$379. You almost NEVER find them used because people tend not to part with them.
