hello. I have a cobra 29 nw ltd that I got at a flea market.. it has a few problems. Not sure if its been messed with yet or not.

one is the squelch knowb turns a 1/4 turn and kills all recieve. Nothing will get thru. I can live with this problem but would like to get it fixed.

Second is every thing else seems to work well but when I talk loud into the mike the power drops off. If I talk quiet or at a normal level it is fine. Only when I make it work. My cheap power meter shows this drop as well as the talk back that I installed.. it did this before I put the talk back in so I know that did not do it. I get good reports from radio checks but I want this thing to TALK.

if any of you got a idea on where to start looking please help me. I am familiar with working on electronics. Mostly worked on older home stereos. Thanks again.

There are several threads here at our site to help you possibly correctly tune the radio up so you can get a base reference for that radio...

Try a Search (Upper Right corner of your Monitor - see SEARCH with a Spyglass? Type in your search criteria there - look for Cobra 29 No Receive or Cobra 29 No Mod or Cobra 29 Mods - those words entered into the Forums search engine might turn up some leads for you...

You can try this link; a lot of participants in this one - was a fun thread...

https://www.worldwidedx.com/threads/cobra-29-ltd-classic-not-transmit.228821/

Another Thread that may interest you...

Then Also - external to this site, is ...
http://www.cbtricks.com/radios/cobra/index.htm <<--Another place for Schematics and reference materials...

Scroll down that page that loads and look for 29NWST or 29WXST or even any of the 29's (LTD GTL - Classic, BT LX LE) might provide the information you need to get started...

I have searched Alot about this and can't find much with the same problem I have. I do know how to search and do before I ask questions. All I am looking for is help. Thanks

You actually have several symptoms - and they can stem from assembly, poorly soldered or corroded works, onto a mis-tuned radio

So, yes, you're going to need to re-SEARCH to get your answers to your various problems - you may find tips and tricks along the way to help answer other questions you haven't even thought of yet....

To simply "want an answer" - we're giving it to you...

We don't have the radio in front of us, we are only able to help as much as we can - using the information provided to us by the person having the issues...

Good luck in your journey!

With an old radio and no idea about it's history a good factory alignment would go a long way. If it has all kinds of crazy mods and something has failed then it would be a challenge even for a good tech to resolve. Most techs hate getting a radio that has had ten sets of fingers inside it.

Thanks. I adjusted the modulation up a little bit and it seemed to help. Could have been bad contact at the pot not sure.
I search many hours before I post a question. I am not lazy and not looking for a quick fix. Was just hoping someone with knowledge would point in the right direction other than "do a search". Like maby a had a transistor that was weak in a certain circuit for instance.

Ok, so you can't find a message or thread that answers your question.

Ok...? There are over 1,000+ Messages and Replies about the MOST POPULAR AM-Only CB Radio out there.

So thank you - I just don't want the sites' 10+ Years of archives to be ignored and their efforts in help and tips, and tricks - for that chassis - from Channel LED displays, Squelch, Audio Mods - onto the MOSFET conversion methods - to be lost or ignored because their efforts also brought out other posters and EXPANDED the knowledge base from the participants adding their experiences onto the thread.

There's too many other people ahead of you, that got their answers and they left behind a trail of bread crumbs for others to follow.

IF you don't understand that approach, then I'm left wondering why you're acting this way towards someone whom is seeing in your first post, the following...

Cobra 29 Flea Market...Pops up with 28 THREADS of similar woes and issues...

"Not Sure if it's been Messed with or not..." - This is Dangerous territory, for the problems you are having in operation indicate there can be many different reasons for that. Then - on top of that, you haven't even opened the radio yet, - Thank you - but now we will have to see what is under that hood - that others before you - already have done.
  • Additionally to know the fact that the radio is used, potentially abused, by another and they got out of that radio what they wanted and since it still (loose term) "worked" - sold it off to another unsuspecting buyer at a Flea market.
We've been down this path so many times with others that have suffered similar fates - we just can't help but get upset over someone whom is going down that same road, and we're trying to get them -Head them - off at the first exit and solve the problem before they run into the bumps, turns, flips and hurdles they're going to encounter because of the others before you have done the same thing.

Well thanks for your time andy. I guess you don't get what I have been saying. I'm done here. There are plenty of sites on the web. I will be going else where. This place is not for me.

on the squelch it supposes to be all the way counter-clockwise unless you just want to set it to only brake on strong signal then you start moving it clockwise until the static goes away there is a pot in the radio for further adjustment the squelch is either on all the time or adjusted for preference best way i can make sense of it when you say if you move it 1/4 you loose receive hope this helps
