Yes, when set to electret it sends voltage on the audio wire. So for a dynamic or power mic it would be best to set it to dynamic. Although I don't think it would hurt anything if it was set wrong.
The 955+ can use an electret mic, and is selectable in the menu. The best mic is DIY with the element from a telephone handset.
Second choice is a Uniden BC645 for less than $20 on Amazon.
