Yes, I did my "Big Talker Package" for him. Nothing fancy, just simple part value changes here and there (and there and there and...), a change in tuning here and there, lovingly mixed in just the right proportions....
Glad you're happy with the radio!
Re: bob
No, Galaxy handles all warranty work in-house. They use no outside shops for warranty work. They do have 3 shops which they will recommend to their customers for work on their out-of-warranty radios, but Bob's isn't among them. Bob's shop was once a warranty repair center for Magnum...
Yup, I know exactly what you mean. I have the same basic attitude to a lot of posts on radio forums where the poster is saying the same thing.
As for the 200GTL doing 450 watts, I believe it. I saw one do 600 watts on my Bird! I'm joking of course.
My choice would be the Delta Force as far as best quality audio. They have a very good mic preamp circuit, very strong. The connex would be my second choice, only because they have a very bassy tone to them, and without modification, don't really have what I would call a sharp, crisp tone. The...
Psycho here obviously knows way more than all of the engineers that ever designed, built, serviced, etc any AM radio equipment ever built. They ALL disagree with him, so he has to be right.
Unless you are a serious collector of Indian Motorcycles and related items, you can't appreciate just how rare that empty oil can really is. I'm not a bit surprised it went for the amount that it went for.
I'll tell you why. Those radios use transformer modulation, and their transformers are stout enough to handle very high audio levels and currents without saturating. This allows the 29 (and 25) to be tailored nicely for VERY high audio. With proper modification, they can be set for a fairly low...
A really good tech can take even a low-end radio and make it perform pretty well, so I'd have to say the tech is most important. It obviously goes a long way when you have a quality radio to begin with.
Service monitors are a nice thing, but most have only the basic function of the various...
They seemed to fly pretty well. One had a gentle oscillation front to back, but a net forward movement in the long run.
One a side note, I found that if you have a large area, you can give those things a downward-angled launch from your hand (like tossing a glider), and they will correct and...
I have to agree. With a supply voltage of 14.3 volts during testing, I've seen well over 60 watts out of a Cobra 29. Now that was on max peaks, including the spike caused by inductive kickback from the transformer when the AMC isn't kicking in, and using an o-scope to calculate that reading. As...
While I do not like the Top Gun Modulator (which Bob is supposed to have come up with), he does have a good reputation in the business. I was talking to a Magnum rep a few days ago about a DOA S9-80 that I had, and the topic of Bob now running a 1-man operation came up. If you do see slow...
many HF rigs only have a narrow-band SSB filter installed from the factory. You need to add a wider (6khz) filter to effectively use the rig on AM. My old Kenwood TS-430S was like that. I had to purchase an AM filter to add to the existing SSB filter. It switched between filters as you switched...
I think the 98 VHP is a good choice. I've heard no complaints about them from anyone so far. If you don't need quite that much power, snap up an RCI 6900 Turbo, and if you dont need the echo/talkback, grab yourself an RCI 2970.
I have also heard both good and bad, unfortunately a bit more bad than good. I haven't seen any of their actual work for myself, so I can't comment on that aspect.
I would love to have the opportunity to just test that radio. it woud be great to take a peak inside, too, just to see what a Copper-style "fine job" looks like....
So far, other than a couple minor issues with the antenna connection coming loose on a couple, I've had nothing but good reports. I keep selling out of these things, both the 440 and 490.
