I don't know if the above post made any sense, but I probably won't have the ground plane kit, and I hope the klv-550 with its preamp and the Imax 2000, 3 feet off the ground will still do damage - around the world, if not locally.

Well, I'm looking at getting the klv-550, which puts out 600 watts. I won't be but 3 feet off the ground, but I'm hoping the preamp on the '550 will make up for the lack of receive in a ground plane kit. Anyone know more about the kits?

King Cobra,
Thanks for sharing your experiences, I will definitely be looking at spending some more cash to get into those out of the way repeaters, or simply put, those repeaters that are far away from me, i.e. 30 miles.
I use the FT-817nd and the supplied rubber duck, that talks on 6m...
The Diamond is a little too pricey for my application, which is for 220 mhz only. How about the Smiley Antennas I'm reading about? Anyone use any of them? If so, which one(s)?

I am going to put up an Imax 2000 next week. In anticipation for this event, I would love to hear how many watts you use to talk skip and how often you get to do so, when you try.
Thanks,

Thanks all, for this info! I am really leaning towards the purchase of a KLV-550. I just wonder if the neighbors will feel my roar on one of these?

I see the HLA-300 at Bander.com, a site which I've familiar with. Perhaps you know the KLV-550, which Bander also sells:

I'm glad someone else here likes the FT-817nd!! :-)
Say, what do you know about those all-mode amps, and can they be modified for 11 meter? I'm guessing they're better than the amps available at places like One Stop and Dave Made, and basically more suitable for radios like the...
Hello Mr. Coily,
It looks like I am going to try an Imax 2000 attached to some PVC piping, which will be cemented in a 5 gallon bucket!

So then, I have a question regarding the counterpoise I'm building. One end will go to my transceiver...
Mr. Coily,
How about long distance work with a counterpoise? I am working on one right now... Surely the Wilson 5000 even indoors (with a counterpoise) will allow me to talk a little skip. I know I can talk skip with the "5000" from my vehicle, but that may not mean much.

I just got this, and I need to find an antenna for it. I am going to use an HT antenna if I can get a good one. Can anyone recommend a good HT antenna?
Thanks.

I just recently acquired the 817nd, and I am very pleased with it. What I like the most about it is the fact that it can be modified with software. That is great. Anyone else running this rig, and what do you do about the lower power output, if anything at all?

I'm a tech. Would love to learn how echolink or other methods can work for us. I don't know much about the two methods you mentioned, and I think some of the others here don't as well. Let's do something to get a CDX Net up and going! :-)
I am new to the forum and looking to install a Wilson 5000 magmount indoors. I have had good luck with these antennas. My question is, do you know of anyone using a mobile antenna INDOORS, and talking skip with it? The "5000" is a 5/8 wave antenna, and I'm thinking real hard about getting it...
