FT-857 will indeed do HF, 6M (lowband VHF), 2M (high band VHF) and 70cm (UHF). What you need to operate it is a General class ham license. You won't be able to legally use it for 11M, MURS, GMRS, FRS etc. Which is fine because dedicated radios will do a better job of all those things anyway.
I...
I really need to get on 60. When it first became available, I entered the frequencies into the memory of my FT-840. But I don't think I've ever made a contact there.
So, I did push the band selector pins out of the J3 connector and moved them around. Now I have CB on "C," 10M SSB on "D," and 10M AM on "E." Perfect.
I do think I'll add a +10 switch, but it's quite a useful radio as it is now.
True, but if they put a jumper from +8 to G instead of the solder bridge to H, it would take nothing from those who want it for 11M but would make it useful out of the box for all hams. I'm pretty sure that would make it more popular. The 28.765 - 29.205 spread out of the box and not knowing...
Well, I just made the DX86V legal for Technicians! Jumped +8V to the G pin on J3, which puts it on 28.305 - 28.755 MHz. Galaxy is really dropping the ball by not jumpering it like that, thereby making it actually usable out of the box.
Ok, that's what I thought except I was thinking the +10K pin needed to be grounded.
I just figured out that unplugging J3 altogether gives Band B, 25.615-26.055. Factory config is +8V jumpered to the H pin which gives Band G, 28.765-29.205. The two unused pins should give me the low end of 10M...
I just got my DX86V and did the standard freq conversion. I watched a video on YT that showed a wire loop on the bottom of the main board, but mine didn't have that. Then I read about a red wire loop on the band board, but mine didn't have that either. But I did notice that J3 on the band board...
My first cb was a single channel (14), 100mw "base station" from Radio Shack. My Granddad gave me some RG6 coax and I ran it up on the roof and connected it to an antenna, also from Rat Shack. Got to be friends via that radio with the local barber (let's call him Jim), who lived down the road...
I am thinking about getting one of those, but for another, non-PLL radio. On this one I would rather access the functions it already has hidden inside.
Well, time for an update because I ordered a DX86V. I have a quad 5 v6 and a quad 6, and decided I want one of these to experiment with. If I can get more freq coverage etc by adding switches, that will be great. If not, just having 11M +uppers and lowers will be fine too since I already have...
Thing about those old engines is you can tune them to do what you need. The new vehicles have a factory computerized tune that is optimized to meet some arbitrary spec, and you cannot legally change it. And since the fedgov is now going after manufacturers that maker tune kits and shops that...
