    Overdrive RK-56 knockoff with FT-857D

There is some of the 'chuffing' that comes with a noise canceller and talking pretty much on top of a mic element. This isn't a hi-fi mic for sure, but definitely sounds better than the 636 or the Road Devil that I've tried previously. The noise cancelling really works well. Again yesterday...

    Overdrive RK-56 knockoff with FT-857D

It's a Chinese knockoff of a Turner Road King 56. Most of the CB shops have them. The link in the first post takes you right to a giant picture of it. It's slightly smaller in the outside dimension than the 636L but it's pretty deep, so it's a decent handful of a mic. It's actual name is...

    Overdrive RK-56 knockoff with FT-857D

So I got a pair of the "Overdrive" RK-56 knockoff mics to play with. I was using Astatic 636L's for use in my Jeep Wrangler, which I frequently drive around in with the windows open and music blasting. The 636L worked well, but has very restricted audio, pretty pinched sounding ,particularly...

    driving with a 102-108 ?????

I drive around with one now and have had them many times over the years. I have no idea what people are talking about with them laying back so far as to scare following cars....they must have used tiny mirror bracket shortie springs or something. All the ones I have wobble about a bit when you...

    Winmor

It's a start in the right direction....yes it's closed source, but the $1500 requirement is at least gone. I'm sort of surprised there hasn't been an open source competitor to winlink popping up yet....wouldn't shock me if one did though. Winlink would disappear quickly if one did. The system...

Tuning the feedline for my G5RV

That's a matter of the voltage drop and level and the radio using it....how it is designed. So big batteries help keep the drop down as do heavy gauge and short power feed wires. The design of the radio itself will depend on what power it outputs at 12V DC. You can increase the size of the...

    Winmor

Automatic operation that in many cases just fires up on top of people in ongoing QSOs. Locally it was misconfigured telpac (packet) gateways on 2m that were destroying an established packet network...took months to get the ops to move them. People obscuring business/commercial email traffic...

Tuning the feedline for my G5RV

:thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1: My first wire was a hamfest G5RV in a bag special. Never liked it, though it met the 'spec' for what it should do. I neutered it. Clipped the choke off the window line and spliced more window line in and fed it from the tuner directly as a 102' doublet...

Tuning the feedline for my G5RV

A G5RV is three half waves on 20m is why. The balanced feeder is an active electrical part of that design. It is part of the antenna. This is why it is important to have that element hanging straight and free of the ground or metal objects. Ideally a G5RV should be flat topped as well due to...

    Winmor

I *hate* Winlink.... But...not for the principal of what they are trying to do. it's the implementation. The biggest issue I have is the closed protocol, closed software and the previous requirement for a proprietary $1500 modem to be able to monitor the traffic or send traffic. I still feel...

    Changing call tone on VX-8R

Repeater directories lie, many machines aren't on line and the PL is frequently wrong. Just checking, but these machines work with other radios you own? You know they are up and running and reachable with all the same information? And...no not necessarily, re: keying a machine 3 miles away...

    VHF Marine Radio Question

I'd say those Icom units are fine. With FM, which is what Marine VHF is, there's not a ton of difference beyond the build quality. You won't get much signal difference between two 25W radios for example. Maybe audio quality, but the way FM works, that 25W will capture the receiver at the same...

Update on friend's AM Station in RI Flood

Gah, what a shame... The plus is that with care and cleaning, I bet that equipment can be brought back. Not a big fan of the content of the station, but still sad to see the flood damage to radio gear.

    Yaesu FTM-350 Review Summary

One note on 220, even at low power... I recently noticed my FT-8800R can receive on 220 with PL or DCS enabled. Using 220 for crossband linking is very nice. What I generally do is set up the shack for crossband using a 220 link frequency with DCS enabled as the input and simply listen to the...

    PACKET PROGRAM/SIMPLE

I forget if I mentioned it here or not. I've pretty much given up on using soundcard for packet. Yes, AGWPE works, as does the linux approach. Both however have weird latency/timing issues with packet generation. Meaning, say this -> |-----------------------------| is the 'window' where...

My experience of using the Yaesu VX-8r as a mobile

My only .02 on that. I prefer the SMA to BNC adapter on the radio and using BNC for the connection. This way if you wear out the BNC, you just replace the adapter on the HT rather than having regular on/off wear of the SMA that is a built in component.

Ham Radio apps for your Android

New info on updating...important The Midnight Channel - Index and The Midnight Channel Wiki Updates now use the Samsung update utility. Much less convoluted. I'm running ZE13.3 right now with good results. The kernel updates thread on the forum has all the details.

Ham Radio apps for your Android

I just got a Samsung Moment for Sprint. I rooted the phone, put Zeffie's version of 05 and CL14 base bin with the ZE12.1 kernel on mine, a day after I got it. The battery life is now a full 'day'. I'm getting 8:30am through midnight on a charge now, two push mail accounts and two polled IMAP...
